Garland Date: June 22, 1999 More info @ http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ridge/5473/ THE GARLAND FAMILY MEETING The Garland Family Research Association will hold annual meeting July 15, 16, and 17, 1999 at the Holiday Inn Express in Erwin, TN, off 1-181. The GFRA is in its 22nd Year and has members in 41 states, Washington, D.C, and 5 countries. The meeting will have a full schedule of social activities, speakers, genealogical sessions, and just plain fun and fellowship. The main event of the meeting will be the D.A.R. unveiling ceremony of a marker to honor the six Garland Men who served in the Revolutionary War and settled in this area, (Carter County, TN) by the mid 1780's. They were Humphrey, John, Samuel, Joseph, Gutridge and Elisha Garland. It will take place in the Bell Cemetery in the Limestone Section of Unicoi County, on Saturday, July 17, 1999, at 11 o'clock, A.M. The Colors and the Mourning of Arms Ceremony, will be presented by the Elizabethton, TN., Company of Over-Mountain Men, honoring them, as they would have been honored during the Revolutionary War. Other planned events: Genealogical Work Sessions, talks on Mountain Herbs used for Medicine, Frontier Medicine, Garland Tales, and famous Garland's and the Civil War Battle of Red Bank which took place in Erwin on the site where the motel now sits. Tours of historical sites: Rocky Mount, Capital of the Territory South of the Ohio River (1790-1792), Carter Mansion, Fort Watauga to see the historical outdoor drama "The Wataugans", (1772-1780), time frame. Other places also. VISIT FROM JOHN SEVIER, SAT. John Sevier, leader of the Mourning of Arms Ceremony, veteran Indian Fighter, and the Battle of Kings Mountain, (Turning point of the Revolutionary War), only governor of the Lost "State of Franklin", and the first Governor of the State of Tennessee will visit us at July 17, at 2:00, and tell us about his life.
