Unfortunely, this is the problem with ANY software, not just FTM. All 
software is constantly being upgraded but you don't have to buy it unless it 
has a substantial "fix" for previous bugs (this is the guideline I go by). 
When you have a higher version e.g., Ver. 7, you can save it as a lower 
version, e.g., Ver. 6, BUT if you have the lower version, you cannot read the 
higher version.

Did you know that if you buy and install Family Tree Maker Version 7, people with an earlier version (even 6.0) will not be able to receive your files until they upgrade?
 
If I am going to be forced to buy each new version that comes out, maybe it's time to change genealogy programs.
