Subject: Family land query From: Rymach Date: June 14, 1998 14 June 1998 We are trying to locate the land where our ancestors, Levi Young and Nancy Marchbanks, originally settled in SC. When they married March 15, 1782, Nancy was living with her father, William Marchbanks, Sr. on or near Pacolet River near ?Gnudali ?? Shoals in Union district, SC. In Rev War pension file W9040, it states that the War was raging at that time. During Levi's absence, Nancy remained with her father. The Tories came to the house, one brandished his sword and drove her father to the Swamp where he fled for safety. The Tories took his horse and family items. Nancy recalled having heard the sounds (guns) of a battle not far from her home, which she believed was Tarleton's defeat. She recalled seeing the Red Coats frequently and to have heard complaints of their plundering in the neighborhood, fear of death, and house burnings. On 1 Jan 1787, Levi Young received 100 acres situated in the District of Ninety Six on the north side of the Pacolet River. However, the attached plat was certified on 7 July 1785. the surveyor having laid out the 100 acres on the north side of the Pacolet River on Marchbanks ?branch? Some years later, the Young family moved into the Pickens area of Pickens District. I need some help. Could this area be near the Cowpens battlefield, and does anyone know where the geographic features might coincide for 'Pacolet River', '?Gnudali? Shoals', 'Swamp', and 'Marchbanks ?branch?' Does Mills Atlas have enough detail to show where this land is? Any suggestions and assistance will be appreciated.
