Since I had something to do with starting this little moratorium, let me
try to set straight my intentions. I said I paid for a family book with a lot
of mistakes in it. I had no problem with paying for it. I know the author put
a lot of time and money into her research. She has a lot of good info and
source documents, but they were taken from notes from a genealogist from the
turn of the last century, which are archived. Unfortunately, it appears when
it came to family info after that genealogist's lifetime, she relied too much
on a couple newspaper "write ups" and what elderly family members told her.
Maybe this was OK for her direct branch of the family, but with my branch,
the errors were blatant. She could have gotten the names straight with a
visit to a couple cemeteries or one visit to the county Courthouse. I am
grateful for what this lady, whom I will not name, put together, and for her
time and money spent, but the point was, when you see someone has made
mistakes with YOUR family, KINDLY send them corrections. How else in the
world do you expect to stop perpetuating errors? Good grief!
