The primary Martin family in Edgefield were from Virginia and 
settled Martintown between North Augusta and Edgefield.  There 
was another smaller group over in Saluda that may well have been 
part of the Germans who settled in that area.

Following the Civil War, most all of the inhabitants of the 
Martintown & Merriwether communities migrated to Brazil.  Today 
the area is a community name, but basically woodlands now being 
developed as upscale housing.
