R.M.C. RECORDS OF CHARLESTON AND DARLINGTON

1733
In Book S pp 334-35, RMC Office for Charleston County is deed dated 3-11-1733,
executed by Susannah Du Bose, widow of late Isaac Du Bose, to John Laurens
(Sadler) conveying, in trust for certain purposes, three tracts of land in
Berkeley County, viz:

300 acres formerly belonging to Henry Lewis, 150 acres formerly of Frances
Courage, bounded on the north side of Santee River and 200 acres on south side
of Santee; also, a tract of 500 acres known by the name of Atthoe, lately
owned by Catherine LaPoste and 200 acres formerly of Peter Cevilland. This
trust deed was executed in anticipation of marriage of Susanna Du Bose to
Bentley Cooke and signed by Susanna Du Bose, Bentley Cook and John Laurens.

Comment: Some records give the dates of birth and death of Isaac Du Bose as
1663-1743 but the above shows that he died prior to 1733. There seems to have
been at least three children brought from France by Isaac and his wife: John I
and two little girls said to have been smuggled out of the country in wine
cases. If true, this indicates that Susanna must have been about twenty, if
not older, when they settled on Santee in 1689, therefore, Susanna was past
sixty when she embarked on her second matrimonial venture with Mr. Bentley
Cooke. It is of interest to note that John Laurens, possibly the grandfather
of the great John Laurens of the Revolution, was a "Sadler" by trade.

1742
Book AA, p 185 (same office) Deed dated June 12, 1742 by Isaac du Bose (II) to
his brothers and sister in property of Susanna Cook, as follows:

150 acres to Elizabeth Whilden (sister)
150 acres to Daniel Du Bose (brother)
185 acres to John Du Bose (brother)
185 acres to Andrew Du Bose (brother)
150 acres to Stephen Du Bose (brother)
Elizabeth, Daniel and Stephen to pay equal shares of a hundred pounds to
Peter (brother).

NOTE: This indicates that Susanna died about 1742. That Isaac owned about 2370
acres of land, that it had been improved and had increased in value, if Peter
was to receive 300 pounds for his distributive share of about 150 acres in his
mother's property. If there were two daughters, one had died prior to 1742.
