The John born 1798, died 1873, would have been alive for the Mexican War although a little "mature" (hey, I'm fifty three years old, before you start spamming) for the conflict 1848 to 1848. Does that sound right? I am confused. There were "drummers" in virtually every war although not popular with US troops after the turn of the century.
