Bill Hughes,
Did you get my email I sent you recently re: the Donaldson/Kershaw trip
to Camden with the injured soldier during the Rev. War???.
I am working on a John Donaldson who was born in England ca. 1745
according to his Rev. War Record. He was a merchant, or so his papers
claimed in land records, in Craven Co. ca. 1775 (the Cheraw Dist., SC.) As
a merchant he did business with the Kershaw brothers, who were wholesalers,
if I remember correctly. During the REV. War, he fought under Harrington
and was at Cross Creek often. He is mentioned in letters in "History of the
Old Cheraws". He also carried, in a wagon, an injured soldier from
Charleston to Camden with Ely Kershaw, who was likely a friend, for Kershaw
was listed as an executor in his Will written in June, 1780,probated 1781
when Donaldson was only 35-36 years old. I have seen information that
claimed many of the young men wrote wills during the war years since they
did not know if they would survive or not.
After the war, John DONALDSON's widow, Sarah, now remarried to Daniel
Hicks, and still in Cheraw, sold 1700 acres of property Donaldson had
bought during the war years in Richmond Co.,NC to pay the debts owed the
Kershaw Co..
John Donaldson and his wife Sarah, had three sons. I have only found
one, John, who married Jincy Fields, daughter of Elizabeth Pledger and Wm.
Fields (marriage record in Richmond Co.,NC). There are two sons missing
still. Peter and William Donaldson. They may have been raised in Cheraw,
but since the records there are so slim, I have yet to find anything .
I did find Sarah and Daniel Hicks in Chesterfield in 1788 in a summons
to appear in court in Marlboro Co., SC.
If anyone has anything they can add to this, I would welcome the
information.
I cannot find any information on where or how Donaldson died in the Rev.
War. I checked the lists of the prison ships that were found in the harbor
in Charleston. Any suggestions? His service record from the Archives did
not give that information.
