Subject: Doing research from your home in South Carolina on VA. From: Gail Moore Date: August 20, 1998 Hello Everyone: I called the library today myself and spoke with a man there who gave me some more information on this: ___________________________________________ Also I have added some internet information that may be of help to some, however you may already know all of this ____________________________________________ For your Research Information for the State of Virginia Hi Gail & All, This is for those who may not know that films from the Archive Branch of the Virginia State Library and Archive in Richmond can be ordered through the interlibrary loan at your local Library for FREE. Most Libraries have film readers which will make copies. The first step is to order, available through interlibrary loan, the "Miscellaneous Reel #461" which contains a listing of Microfilmed county court records, with reel number. To borrow this microfim, contact your local librarian and request that an American Library Association interlibrary loan form Or OCLC be submitted to the Inter Library Loan Dept. of, The Library of Virginia 800 East Broad St., Richmond, VA 23219-3491, with Reel name and number. I hope this information will be of help. Until next time, Doris ************ The first step is to order, available through interlibrary loan, the "Miscellaneous Reel #461" which contains a listing of Microfilmed county court records, with reel number. OR******************* Using your hometown Librarys' online computer you can do the same thing I have given here step by step instructions on getting to their site. **************************************************************** First go to: http://leo.vsla.edu/ Scroll down to Online Catalogs and Image Databases and click, this take you to: http://leo.vsla.edu/lva/col.html scroll down to ALL DATABASES and click, this will take you To: http://198.17.62.51/ click on Index to Wills and Administrations (Torrence) Next choose a search type I use Key Word or Phrase When this opens up type in your surname given name if known in this order and hit search. *************************************************************** If your library computer has a tiff viewer (must be like the one at the Library of Virginia in order to work right) then you can go direct to: http:\\198.17.62.51\Reel461\ and view it! Find the reels that you need and have your library place your order. For more on the tiff viewer go the the URL listed last and above, there is a place where you can download it and also information on loading. Now they use the term attach, but alas I found out you do not attach but associate it. To do this: Right click on my Computer on the desktop, go to explore then at the top toolbar click on View, then click on options then file types at this box scroll down to see if tiff is listed. Next look at the bottom of this same box and see what it is associated to it should be the name of a tiff file, the name you gave it when downloading if NOT click on Edit then go down a bit to the next Edit box and click Edit again then click brouse and look for your file, highlight it and then exit back out to the association box, now your file should show up there. If so then exit out and start using it. I sure hope this helps everyone who can't make a trip to VA in person to locate missing links and branches of their trees!
