Subject: Divorced in 1880? - Answer From: Damita Green Date: October 09, 1999 Many thanks to all who have responded. I thought I'd post the answer in case anyone else needs the info. "Before 1880, divorce, as a practial legal remedy, did not exist in South Carolina...From 1868 until 1878 when a legislative statute again outlawed divorce, divorce could be obtained in the courts of common pleas. Since 1950, divorce has been legal in South Carolina." Source: African American Genealogical Research by Paul R. Begley, Alexia J. Helsey, and Steven D.
