district/county question - Tony and Julie Howell

good morning list - i have printed off info that shows the original
south carolina districts and the counties that they were divided into.

i thought that, before the district was split up into counties it would
have been referred to (in wills, documents, etc.) as sumter (or
whichever) "district". however, i have a copy of a will from a john
thames, jr. dated in 1818 (the info i referred to above about the
districts indicates that clarenden county wasn't formed until 1855)
where he refers to living in clarenden county in the sumter district?

was it usual to refer to a name of a county presumably before it was
officially formed? i hope this does not sound like a dumb question. i
would like to make sure that, on all of my research notes, i have the
districts/counties listed correctly.

thank you, and i hope each of you has a nice day.
