Subject: Definitions From: Margaret B Miller Date: August 25, 1998 Steve: Would you or some other nice person be so kind as to define the following words for me: 1) cowpen 2) landgrave 3) cassique I know the latter two were of the Carolina "royalty" under the Fundamental Constitution, that the landgrave was entitled to 1-4 baronies of 12,000 acres. Not free but with strings attached. I have seen the term "cowpen" used during the proprietory period in some records. Appreciate any help I can get.
