Subject: Definition of Yeoman From: The Helsleys Date: May 06, 1999 Historically, and this was true as an undergraduate studying British History, as well as in graduate school, the definition of yeoman that is closest comes from the American College Dictionary: "an independent farmer, often praised for sturdiness and loyalty." If I remember correctly, the yeomen were one of the keys that allowed the British system to work. In the words of Professor Boyd Coiner of Hampden-Sydney College, this stable population base helped liberty to grow which was the 'fruit of slow growth in a stable society.'
