Deed of John Anderson reclaiming Slaves 1814 - Deborah Byrd
Subject: Deed of John Anderson reclaiming Slaves 1814

This is a rather long deed so I'll do a summary.

Sumter District S.C. deed book D, Salt Lake City film number 0355679

Henry Vaughan in his last will and testament dated 1 April 1811 willed that
Shang or China, Merriman, Nancy & Prise also Edmond and Dianard should have
their freedom and also further that Peg & Thisby the mothers of the above
named negro slaves should on the death of his wife Margaret Vaughan have
their freedom. Henry departed this life 5 March 1814 leaving the will in
force. The will was probated 2 June 1814.

John Anderson Sr. of Sumter then invoked an act of the General Assembly
passed on the 20 Dec 1800 which delcared that in case of a slave "shall be
after the passing of the said Act emancipated, other than in the said act is
mentioned that it shall and my be lawfull for any person whomsoever to seize
and convert to his or her own use & to keep as his or her property the said
slave so illegally emancipated or set free."

John Anderson seized the slaves and sold them for $1.00 to Margaret Vaughan
and John B. Miller of Sumter District. Margaret was to have the use of them
for her life then at her death were to be divided amongst the four children
of Margaret and the desceased Henry Vaughan.

Signed, Sealed and delivered 3 June 1814

I found this to be a rather startling deed. Other deeds which freed slaves
for $1.00 or less now made sense.
