Thank you for sharing this info. and website that illustrates variations of 
old handwriting.

Everyone knows how hard it is to decipher census records. I have read and 
encountered many of the early census takers being barely literate, so spelled 
surnames phonetically. Also when it came to Districts, Localities or 
Townships in the County  where the resident lived, if the census taker wasn't 
sure or couldn't spell it, many entered the District , Locality or Township 
where they (the person recording the census) resided. Just adds a little bit 
of confusion to research.
