DAVIS, JOSEPH B.	1829-1906 	PIERCE

Joseph B. Davis was born in Ware County Apr. 2,1829, son of George W. Davis 
(above). He was married. in 1847 to a cousin, Rhoda Davis, born c1830, 
daughter of Early Davis, Sr. She died about 1852. Mr. Davis married the 
second time about 1853 to Mehala Crawford, born 1828 in this state, 
daughter of John Crawford. Ten children were born to them. These ten with 
the first two, in their order were:

1. Jincy	b. 1848,	m. Benjamin Dickson (Dixon), Jan. 7,1880. (2nd wife).
2. Elizabeth	b. 1850,	m. Isham Tyre (son of Jackson Tyre).
3. Lucretia	b. 1854,	m. William Daniel Griffis, Oct;4,1879.
4. Burly	b. 1856,	m. Martha Jane Dixon, Feb. 27, 1879, dau. of  	Benj.
5. Cape Fear	b. 1858,	m. John M. Moody.
6. Liberia	b. 1861,	m. Nelson C. Harrison, Feb. 4,1885.
7. Early	b. 1864,	m. Odie Hodge, Sept. 8,1886.
8. Jewell	b. 1866,	m. John Moody, Feb. 2,1885.
9. Berkeley	b. 1868,	m. Macy Lee.
10. Harley	b. 1871,	never m. Was afflicted. Died July 1907.
11. Lamar	b. 1875,	m. Mrs. Mary F. Jones-Long.
12. Marshall C.	b. 1877,	m. Mary Raulerson.

Mr. Davis was living in Ware County when Pierce County was created in 1858, 
and was cut into the new county. He enlisted at Blackshear Dec. 13, 1860, 
in Pierce's first military unit made up of volunteers known as the Atlantic 
& Gulf Guards, raised in anticipation of war following Lincoln's election 
in Nov. 1860; it was commanded by Capt. Enoch D. Hendry (Vol. III), and 
formed a part of the stafe militia. On Aug. 29, 1861 the unit was merged 
into the Confederate Army for a 6month term. It was mustered out March 31, 
1862. Mr. Davis then enlisted Nov. 22, 1862, in Co. "E", 4th Georgia 
Cavalry Regiment; and on Dec. 1, 1863, he transferred to Clinch's Battalion 
of Light Artillery.
This unit was engaged in the defense of Savannah against Sherman's invading 
army in December, 1864. The Company roll shows "went into the Federal lines 
at Fort McAllister, Dec. 24, 1864, and was sent north Feb. 18, 1865. He 
returned home after the end of the War in April, 1865, and resumed farming. 
His home and farm were on Cross Swamp. He died Dec. 30, 1907, and his wife 
died Dec. 16, 1910. They were buried in Patterson town cemetery.


DAVIS, WILLIAM EMMETT	1858-1928 	LANIER

William Emmett Davis was born in Clinch County in 1858, son of William L. 
Davis (Vol. D. He was married in Clinch County in September 1878, to Eliza 
Bennett, born 1858, daughter of Abraham Bennett (Vol. III). They had the 
following children:

1. Dovie Lula	b. Sept, 11, 1879,	m. Samuel S. Register, Dec. 20,1901
2. William L.	b. June 30,1882,	m. 1st: Minnie Johnson, dau. of James; 2nd 
Mrs. Nellie Dozier Hale.
3. Flora	b. Apr. 28, 1884,	died age 11 months.
4. Marion Alonzo	b. Oct. 3,1885,	m. Lula King, dau. of John.
5. James Levin	b. June 24,1889,	m, Nancy Anderson, dau. of Wm.
6. Henry Webster	b. Aug. 29,1891,	m. Ocie Rutherford of Berrien Co.
7. Della Floy	b. May 12,1893,	m. Willie B. Davis (1st c.).
8. Alpha Mae	b. Dec. 8,1896,	m. Joseph Mixon of Clinch Co.

Mrs. Eliza Bennett Davis died Oct. 4, 1913, and was buried at Wayfare 
Church. Mr. Davis later married Mrs. Nannie Giddens Larey but had no 
further issue. He died about 1928, at his home in Lowndes county and was 
buried by his first wife.


DAVIS, JOSEPH WILLIAM	1842-1915 		PIERCE

Joseph William Davis was born January 7, 1842 in Ware County, and died July 
3, 1915 in Pierce County. Joseph was the son of James Madison Davis and 
Nancy Carter. On February 23, 1869, Joseph Davis married Elizabeth "Betsy" 
Chancey, daughter of William and Marantha Thomas Chancey. Elizabeth was 
born February 23, 1852. Her wedding day was also her 17th birthday. 
Elizabeth died June 9, 1929. They are buried at the Mill Creek Church 
cemetery, Pierce County, Georgia. They settled on land given to them by her 
father, William Chancey. To Joseph and Elizabeth were born eleven children:

5. Ira M.	b. 5/22/1878,m. Hattie Roberson. d. 1953.
6. Amma Dulia	b. 6/20/1879, m. Ellis Dickerson.  d. 9/23/1961.
7. John M.	b. 2/5/1883, m. Mable Moody.  d. 11/11/1953.
8. Mary Ann	b. 12/12/1884, m. William A. Walker,
	d. 10/9/1973.  		8/28/1910, Mill Creek Church.
9. Millie Mozelle	b. 6/23/1887, m. John Williamson.  d. 5/2/1961.
10. Sallie Mabell	b. 10/2/1892, m. James Brockman. d. 9/10/1961.
11. Dossie E.	b. 8/28/1894, m. Azalee Thornton.   d.2/20/1928.

DAVIS, LEVIN	1854-1945		ECHOLS

Levin Davis was born November 11, 1854, in Bulloch County, a son of William 
L. and Mary Ann Woods Davis (Vol.1). He was about seven years old when his 
parents removed to Clinch County where he grew up and married. He was 
married twice. His first marriage was on September 23, 1875, to Ardelia F. 
Stanford, born in Clinch County, April 15, 1857, a daughter of Capt. Reubin 
Y. Stanford (Vol IV). All of his ten children were born by her

6. Verdie Mary Lee	b.5/18/1889,	m. Herman Hicks, 1/1913.
7. Floyd B.	b.10/2/1891,	m. Lillie Mae Keene, 1/1915.

Mr. Davis continued living in Clinch County until about 1879-80 when he 
moved to Echols County, and bought a farm near Howell Station, living there 
the remainder of his life. After his first wife's death, he married Mrs. 
Lucretia Starling, widowed daughter of F.M. Rodgers and his first wife, 
Zilpha Register. There was no issue by her. Mr. Davis was a highly 
respected citizen of his county, and his children grew up to become highly 
-respected also. One of the sons, Lucius A. Davis, was a Primitive Baptist 
Minister. Mr. Davis died in Adel, November 16, 1945, age 91 years, five 
days after his birthday. He was buried, by his first wife, at Wayfare 
Primitive Baptist Church.
