Subject: Davis-POWG-4 From: gslat Date: December 23, 1999 DAVIS, GEORGE W. 1800-1858 PIERCE George W. Davis was born in Montgomery County in 1800, a son of Arthur Davis (Vol. V). He was married in 1825 to Amelia Wilson, born 1810 in Telfair County, daughter of Joseph Wilson. They had the following children: 1. Mary b. 1826, m. -----Denmark. A widow in 1850. 2. Joseph B. b. 1828, m. 1st: Rhoda Davis, dau. of Early, Sr.; 2nd Mehala Crawford, dau. of John. 3. James L. b. 1830, m. Harriet Crawford, dau. of Rev. Reubin. 4. George W. Jr. b. 1831, m. Mrs. Charlotte Byrd, dau. of Berrien Henderson 5. Matilda b. 1832, m. James Denmark. 6. Chariton S. b. 1833, m. Eliza ------ 7. Benjamin C.(Vol. V) b. 1835, m. Jane Brown, dau. of William. 8. Amelia b. 1837, m. (unknown). 9. Harriet b. 1838, m - ------ Middleton. 10. Allen M. b. 1843, m. Martha E. 11. Ardelia b. 1845, m. David Cason, April 3,1880. Mr. Davis moved to Ware County soon after marriage, and is found there in the 1830, 1840 and 1850 censuses. He died there about 1857-8. In the creation of Pierce County out of Ware in December, 1858, his family was cut into the new county; and his widow appears in the Pierce 18N census, and living with her were her children Benj. C., Allen and Ardelia. In 1880 census she was living with her son, Benj. C. Davis. She died during the 1880s. George W. Davis was Justice of Peace in the 584th district of Ware (now Pierce) County, 1847-1840. He served in the Indian War as a private in Capt. James Walker's company of Ware County militia, June 9th to Aug. 19, 1838 DAVIS, IVY 1845-1913 CLINCH Ivy Davis was born in McIntosh County in 1845 and was a son of Joseph L. and Levina Davis who moved about 1865-6 to Ware County and settled in the present Manor district. Ivy Davis came on to Clinch County soon after he became of age, and was married there Jan. 21, 1868, to Miranda Smith, born 1854, daughter of William E. Smith (Vol. V). To them were born seven children: 1. Lena Belle b. 1869, m. Francis N. Knight, Nov. 10, 1886. 2. Joseph W.* b. 1871, m. 1st: Wealthly Pafford, dau. of Rowan; 2nd Mattie Swilley, July 1897, dau of Sherod of Brooks Co. 3. Amanda b. 1872, m. Newsom T. Pafford, March 29,1896. 4. McIntyre b. 1874, died 1890; 5. Sentell b. 1876, m. Marion M. Pafford, March 29, 1886. 6. Rushin b. 1879, killed accidently when about grown. 7. Addie b. 1881, died 1890. Mr. and Mrs. Davis were active members of Antioch Methodist Church near their home and were in the organization of the church in 1876. He served as a church steward many years, also as Sunday-school superintendent. He was President of the County Sunday-school Association, 1898-1902, and had taken before then a leading part for twenty-odd years in promoting the organization which was interdenominational. Mr. Davis was N. P., Exo. J. P., in his district, the 1141st, 1873-1877 and again 1891-1895. In 1903 he sold out his homeplace lands and moved to Brunswick where he lived in retirement until his death in 1913. He and his wife were buried there. ( * ) The son, listed as Joseph William, was named for his two grandfathers; his name also appears in some instances as William J. He was known as "Joe" Davis. DAVIS, JAMES 1787-1857 PIERCE James Davis was born in 1787 in Cheraw District,S. C., a son of Arthur Davis, R. S., (Vol. V). His parents returned in his childhood to Anson Co., N. C., and he grew up there and in Washington (now Montgomery) County, Ga. He was married twice. His first wife, Mary, was a daughter of Moses Burgess of McIntosh County; by her five children were born. She died about 1820.. His second wife, Elizabeth, born in South Carolina, maiden name unknown. The 1830 and 1840 censuses indicates she was born 1800 or after; the 1850 census says 1802 and the 1860 census says 1800; but her tombstone in Ramah Church cemetery in Pierce County, says she was born 1794, which was probably incorrect. By her seven children were born. The twelve children in their order were: 1. Moses B. b. 1812, died in his youth. 2. Daniel D. b. 1814, m. Rebecca Hall, dau. of Lewis (Vol. 1). 3. James Madison b. 1816, m. Nancy Carter; two other wives, unknown. 4. Martha b. 1817, m. John A. Spivey. 5. Randall J. (Vol. 11) b. 1818, m. Emeline Hiers, dau. of Joseph. 6. George W. b. 1829 m. Jane ------ 7. Caroline b. 1831, m. (unknown). 8. Hester b. 1834, m. Dred Byrd. 9. Malissie b. 1836, m. (unknown). 10. Amanda b. 1839, m. (unknown). 11. Mary b. 1841, m. Thompson Harris (son of Hampton). 12. Harley b. 1846, m. Susan Aspinwall. James Davis was a private in the Georgia militia in the War of 1812. He enlisted at Darien in 1813 in Capt. Samuel Owens' company of McIntosh county militia, and served six months, all as shown by his bounty-land application made in Ware (now Pierce) County, Sept. 1, 1855. He was living in McIntosh County at the time of service and was still there in the 1820 census. In the 1830, 1840, 1850 censuses he was living in the 584th district of Ware County (which district was cut into Pierce County in 1858).
