Subject: Davis-POWG-3 From: gslat Date: December 23, 1999 DAVIS, BENJAMIN C. 1835-1884 PIERCE Benjamin Colson Davis was a son of George W. and Amelia Davis, and was born in Ware County, now Pierce, May 30, 1835. He was married in Pierce county, Feb. 14, 1861, to Jincy (sometimes called "Jane") Brown, daughter of William Brown (q.v.). She was born in Bulloch county, April 4, 1839 and moved in girlhood with her parents to Ware, now Pierce County. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Davis were nine children: 1. Allen L. b. Dec. 12, 1861. m. Sept. 14, 1868, m. Ist. viola Dixon, Dec. 8, 1891; 2nd. Jean Courson. 5. Piety b. Mar. 18. 1870, m. Wm. T. Dykes, Jan. 2, 1889. 6. John Mason b. April 1, 1874, m. Clara Lewis, dau. of Chas. H. 7. William Silas b. Jan. 1, 1874, m. Rhoda Dryden, Sept. 12, 1897. 8. Jane Leila b. Jan. 6, 1876, m. Dr. Wm. N. Brown, Feb. 18, 1903. 9. Benj. Franklin b. Jan. 9, 1879, m. Emma Altman, Nov. 22, 1902. The home-place of Mr. Davis was located four miles southeast of Blackshear. After his rather early death, Mar. 14, 1884, Mrs. Davis kept the home together and managed the farm and reared the younger children to maturity. She and the youngest son continued to live there until her death, June 9, 1931. The Davis home was known as a very hospitable one. Mr. and Mrs. Davis were buried at Shiloh Church near Blackshear, also all their children are buried there except Wm. S. Davis and Mrs. Brown. DAVIS, STAFFORD, JR. 1827-1902 COFFEE Stafford Davis, Jr., was born in Montgomery County May 10, 1827, son of Stafford Davis (Vol.II). Moving with his parents to Ware County while yet a boy, he was married there in 1849 to Eliza Adeline Murray, daughter of J. J. S. Murray (Vol.I). She was born Jan. 2, 1823, in Liberty County. They had the following children: 1. Adeline b. 1850, m. John Hill. 2. Daniel b. 1852, m. Narcissus Wooten, dau. of Bryant. 3. Jehu b. 1854, m. Lucretia -------- 4. Sabra b. 1855 ' prob. died young. 5. William Calvin b. 1857, m. (unknown). 6. Penny b. 1859, m. Joe Ellis. 7. Martha Ann b. 1860, m. Warren Tanner. 8. Arthur F. b. 1861, m. Penny Nettles 1st c.), dau. of Samuel P. 9. Thomas D. b. 1864, m. Maria Jewell. Oct. 3, 1886, dau. of Reubin. 10. John M. b. 1863, m. Millie Mr. Davis served in the Florida Indian War in 1855-57 as a private in Capt. F. M. Durrence's company of Florida militia. He lived in southeastern Coffee County near the Satilla River. He died there Nov. 18, 1902, and his wife died soon after, on Dec. 15th, following. They were buried in the Walden Cemetery near Millwood in Ware County. DAVIS, SHEPPARD. 1814-1903 PIERCE Sheppard Davis was born in Beaufort District, S.C., Dec. 20, 1814, son of William Davis and his wife Mary Stafford Davis. His parents moved to Georgia in his boyhood and he grew up in Effingham County where he was married June 13, 1844, to Ardelia A. Wilson, born Dec. 12, 1828, daughter of Josiah Wilson. Mrs. Sarah Jenkins Strickland, widow of James B. 3. George b. Dec. 31, 1848, m. Charlotte Henderson, dau. of Berrien. 4. John M. b.Apr. 30, 1851, m. Eleanor Kennedy. 5. Patience Charlotte b. Sept. 20, 1853, m. Jesse Floyd. 6. Delia Ann b. Mar. 13, 1856, m. James R. Woodland. 7. Thomas Allen b. Apr. 27, 1858, m. Tobitha Byrd. 8. Susannah b. Nov. 13, 1860, m. Martin Sweat. 9. Mary Emma b. Apr. 15, 1863, died Dec. 15,1871. 10. Farley Reppard b. Jan. 10, 1866, m. Agnes Aspinwall. 11. Tallulah b. July 15, 1868, William Jackson Leggett. 12. Sarah Ada b.Dec. 14, 1872, m. Ezekiel J. Dixon. Sheppard Davis moved with his family to Pierce County about the time of its creation in 1858, and lived there until his death Sept. 24, 1903. His wife died July 31, 1884. They were buried in Shiloh Church cemetery near Blackshear. DAVIS, EARLY 1820-1861 WARE Early Davis was born in Appling County, Feb. 10, 1820, a son of Early Davis (Sr.), who was one of the first settlers of Appling County in 1819. Early Davis, the subject, was married in Ware County, March 27, 1938, to Delilah Lott, born in Telfair (now Coffee) County, July 9, 1822, daughter of Joel Lott (Vol. III). To them were born six children: 1 . Joel J. b. March 6,1841, m. Mary Martha Wilson, dau. of Thomas. 2. Absalom b. Feb. 18,1844, died single, Aug. 20, 1863. 3. Rhoda b. Mar. 26,1848, m. Henry B. Wilson, son of Thos. 4. Francis T. b. Sept. 24, 1850, died Jan. 8,1862. 5. Margaret b. Oct. 21, 1853, m. John Harley Wilson, son of Thos. 6. Americus b. Mar. 10, 1857, m. George Broxton. Mr. Davis served in the Indian War as a private in Capt. N. J. Holton's Company, of Appling County militia, June 9th to Aug. 19, 1838. He served as a Justice of Ware Inferior Court, 1853-1856, resigning before his term was to expire in January, 1857. In December, 1849, he moved to lot of land 41, 8th district in northern Ware County, and made it his home until his death Nov. 25, 1861. The deed to the lot was made to him by Mrs. Jerusha Beverly on May 1, 1850 (see deed book "I", p. 189, Ware). The oldest son (who used the name Joseph instead of Joel) applied for administration on his father's estate, April 25, 1862, and was appointed. He as the administrator sold lot 41 and adjoining lot 42 to the widow (his mother) at administrator's sale, Nov. 1, 1867 (deed book "I", p. 190, ibid). On Oct. 11, 1870, he as the administrator sold lot 386, 6th district of Coffee County, to Joshua J. Kamp (deed book "B", p. 109, ibid). These three lots constituted the lands of the deceased at his death. Mrs. Delilah Davis died Sept. 2,1894, and was buried by her husband in Telmore cemetery in northwestern part of Ware County.
