DAVIS, William L.	1829-1862 CLINCH

WILLIAM L. DAVIS was a resident of the Wiregrass only a short time but his
descendants are numerous here today. He was born in Bulloch county in
1829, and moved with his family to Clinch county in 1861, and shortly
thereafter the beginning of the civil war took place, and he enlisted in
Company "D", 26th Georgia Infantry Regiment, and went to the front. The
next year he was killed in battle. He enlisted at DuPont, then called
"Suwannoochee"; his company was from another county. His late son, Levin
Davis, recalling in his 90th year his father's enlisting, said his father
took his family to Dupont, their nearest railroad station, and there they
spent their last night together as guests in the Dupont family home; the
next morning when the trainload of troops came through and stopped he got
on board; bidding his loved ones an affectionate farewell. They never saw
each other again.
Mr. Davis married Miss Mary Ann Woods of Screven county; she was a daughter
of John or Jack Woods and was born July 24, 1826, and died at the home of
her son, Levin, October 10, 1910; she was buried at Wayfare Primitive
Baptist Church, of which she was a member many years. The children were:

7. Mitchell	b. 1860, died in infancy.

Mr. Davis had two sisters who moved to Clinch County also: Frances who
married Randall Skinner, and Elizabeth who married Henry Brown. These
moved from Bulloch to Clinch about the same time. A brother, Thomas Davis,
remained in Bulloch County.
