Subject: DANIEL/CATES SC.ALA From: vtoole Date: August 15, 1998 Need parentage of Martha Cates who lived in the Fort Deposit area of Lowndes and Butler County, Alabama. She was b. c. 1787 or later and d. c. 188-1 in the same area. According to a rejected pension application for the War of 1812, she said her maiden name was Martha Daniel and that she was married to John Cates by Rev. Deloach about 1815 in Edgefield District, South Carolina. She was probably not his first wife or her marriage year was given in error. The Cates lived in the Ridge Spring area of eastern Edgefield that became Saluda County. They migrated to the Fort Deposit area c. 1823. The census gives her birth place as North Carolina, but this could be in error. Does anyone have any information on any family for William and Jesse Daniel who were witnesses to deeds in 1775 and 1776 in Orangeburg Dist., SC. Thanks in advance. Vivian T.
