Looking for any info on a Creek Indian Chief mentioned in the South
Carolina Gazette (1760)
who was known by the English name of DUVALL'S LANDLORD. Gazette
indicates he was friendly with the white settlers and that he went with
a Mr. Joseph Wright to see Governor Ellis in Savannah. With him were
other Creeks:
The Wolf, The Gun Merchant, The Oakfussee Captain, and The Miser, and
the Tallasee headmen. These Indians it is said saved several white
people from being murdered.

I am curious about the origin of the name of
Duvall's Landlord. My earliest known Duvall ancestor is a Capt. Lewis
Duvall born ca. 1750
Laurens Co., SC and served in the Rev. War.
In trying to find his parentage, a cousin of mine found a Royal Grant to
a Lewis Dervill dated 1735 for land in the county of GRANVILLE in the
Reserved land of PURISBOURG. My Capt. Lewis Duvall recieved a land
grant in 1770 when he was approximately 20 years old and is listed in an
Abstract of Land Titles Book as owning land in GRANVILLE county of the
reserved land of PURRYSBURGH township in 1775.....perhaps inherited from
his father?
Am wondering if the 1738 Land Grant to the Lewis Dervill could have been
land originally claimed by the Indian chief, hence the name
DUVALL'S LANDLORD mentioned in the 1760 newspaper. Any suggestions of
other sources that might list this Indian chief by name? Any help would
be greatly appreciated!
