The Cooper River was named for the Lord's Proprietor Lord Ashley Cooper(Earl
of Shaftsbury). Both the Ashley & Cooper Rivers were named for him. They
had Indian names, Kiawah & Etiwan, previous to that. The renaming occured
ten years after the settling of Charles Towne(Charleston. I am not sure
when the first bridge was built but, there were many ferries across the
different areas, such as Strawberry ferry at the old town of Childsburym
which no longer exists. There were small wooden bridges across the creeks
and tributaries. The toll bridge was completed in 1929 at the cost of
$4,700,000. The toll for car & driver was .50 and .15 for each passenger.
Lakes Moultrie and Marion were formed in 1936 when the South Carolina Public
Service Authority(Santee Cooper) was formed. Between 1862 and 1865 there
were many mines placed in the channels between Castle Pinckney and Fort
Ripley and sourrounding area. These mines were placed in beer barrells with
a nose cone fitted on them. The whole of Charleston harbor was eventually
covered with the mines. There is no mention of a bridge during this time.
I just looked through a book on Charleston and I could not find a picture
that showed a bridge.
