COOK, ISAAC NEWTON 	1774-1854	THOMAS

Isaac Newton Cook, early Methodist pastor in South Georgia, was born April 
5, 1774, in Charleston, S. C. He was a
son of Benjamin Cook, R.S., and wife Sibbie, natives of Connecticut. The 
latter moved from Wallingford, Conn., their former home, to Charleston, S. 
C. Isaac N., the son, was married Sept. 5, 1805, in Camden County, Ga., to 
Rachael Graham, born 1787 in South Carolina, a daughter of Alexander and 
Ann Graham-, natives of Scotland. Five children were born by this marriage, 
viz:

1. Louisa	b. May 7, 1810, died young.
2. John B. F.	b. Feb. 2, 1811. m. Ist. Lucinda Hutchinson of 	Alabama; 2nd 
- -------- Hart.
3. Nancy	b. May 9, 1813, m. Isaac Wheeler of Thomas Co., April 24, 1834.
4. Isaac N. Jr.	b. April 7, 1816, died young.
5. William	b. Oct. 15: 1821, died young.

Isaac Newton Cook in his young manhood was converted and united with the 
Methodist Church. He was ordained to the ministry in 1801 by Bishop Francis 
Asbury, and became a member of the South Carolina Conference. In 1803 he 
was assigned as pastor of the St. Marys (Ga.) Circuit, and in 1805 was 
returned there for another year. It was during his second service that he 
married. He served various appointments in Georgia under appointment of the 
South Carolina Conference which had jurisdiction over both states until 
1831 when the Georgia Conference was established. The Georgia Conference 
then exercised jurisdiction over both Georgia and Florida until 1845 when 
the Florida Conference was formed which when formed included South Georgia. 
Rev. Cook served in the itinerate ministry for many years, and also served 
several years from time to time as Presiding Elder. Among his pastorates 
were Milledgeville, Tallahassee (Fla.) and Thomasville. He spent his last 
years in Thomas county and died at Thomasville at the age of about 80 
years, having superannuated some years before his death.


COOK, HENRY, JR.	1800-1847	JEFF DAVIS

Henry Cook, Jr., was born in Montgomery County about 1800, son of Henry 
Cook, R.S., and his wife Susannah Hall
Cook. The latter was a daughter of Enoch Hall, R.S., (Vol. 1). Henry Cook, 
Jr., married his second cousin, Piety Hall,
daughter of Lewis Hall, R.S., (Vol.I). She was born Jan.9, 1803, Wilkinson 
County. They were married in Telfair Co., Nov. 2, 1820. To them were born 
the following children, viz:

1. Instance	b. 1824, m. Marjory Wilcox, dau. of John.
2. Seabom	b. 1829, m. (unknown).
3. John	b. 1833 m. Henrietta Mann, dau. of Wm., Jr.
4. Marjory	b . 1835: m. (unknown).
5. Mary Ann	b. 1839, m. James W. Johnson.
6. Nancy	b. 1842, m. Thomas Deen, son of Martin.
7. Diodema	b. 1843, m. John R. Johnson.
8. Jehu	b. 1844, died single in C.S.A., Sept. 16, 1864.

Henry Cook, Jr., and family lived in Telfair County in the Ist, district of 
old Appling County, south of the Ocmulgee River, until the creation of 
Coffee County in 1854 when they were included in the new county. He died 
there in 1847, and his son Instance Cook, applied for administration of his 
estate Nov. 1, 1847, and was appointed. The widow, Piety, was appointed 
guardian for their minor children, Jane, John, Mary Ann, Nancy, Elizabeth, 
Diodema and Jehu Cook, Jan. 11, 1847, by Telfair Inferior Court. John Cook 
was appointed administrator de bonis non of the estate March, 1857, by the 
Ordinary of Coff ee County; and at the June Term, 1857, he was granted 
leave to sell lots 422, 427, 430, in Ist district of Coffee county, same 
being the home-place lands. At the same term, John resigned the 
administration and Instance was re-appointed administrator, and sold the 
lands.
The widow and minor children moved to Appling County in the 1850s, and she 
died there Aug. 21, 1890. She was
buried in Zoar Cemetery in that county. Mr. Cook served as Justice of 
Peace, 437th district Telfair County, 1837-1840.


COOK, INSTANCE	1824-1869  JEFF DAVIS

Instance Cook, who lived in present Jeff Davis County, was born in Appling 
County March 7, 1824, a son of Henry and Piety (Hall) Cook.  His mother's 
father was Lewis Hall, R. S. (see Vol. 1).  His parents moved to Thomas 
County soon after his birth and about ten years later they moved to Telfair 
County and settled on the Oemulgee River where the elder Cook died in 1846.
Instance Cook was married July 10, 1849, to Miss Marjory Wilcox (her name 
shown as Margaret in 1860 Census).  She was born February 10, 1834, a 
daughter of John and Elizabeth (Simmons) Wilcox.  John Wilcox was a 
grandson of John and Rebecca Wilcox (see Vol. 1).  To Instance and Marjory 
Cook were born eleven children:

1. John Franklin	b. July 22, 1852, m. Christine D. McArthur.
2. Henry	b September 25, 1853, m. Florence Sikes.
3. Quitman	b: January 31, 1855, m. Ida Pickren, daughter of John J.
4. Matthew	b. April 27, 1859, m. Margaret E. McNatt.
5. Instance L.	b. November 18, 1860, m. Augusta Dyall, daughter of Elijah.
6. Morgan	b. July 24, 1862, m. Taliula Rawlins.
7. Jehu	b. January 31, 1864, m. Ella Eliza McAllister.
8. Laura	b. January 14, 1866, m. Forrest L. Dyall.
9. James Monroe	b. May 16, 1867, m. Maude Haney.
10. Elizabeth	b. 1868, m. Andrew Clementa.
11. Marjory	b. October 24, 1869, m. Elijah Pickren.

Mr. Cook died October 11, 1869.  His widow died May 15, 1917.  He was a 
member of Rising Sun Lodge No. 20, of Masons at Reidsville.

COOK, ELIJAH.	1816-1889 	BERRIEN

Elijah Cook, forefather of a large connection of the name in Berrien and 
Lanier counties, was born in Wilkinson County, Nov. 22, 1816, a son of 
James Cook who was said to have come to Wilkinson from Effingham County. 
Elijah Cook was married twice. His first wife was Sallie Webb, daughter of 
Dawson Webb of Wilkinson but who moved to Berrien County in the 1850s. They 
were married in Wilkinson County, May 14, 1837, She died when her first 
child was born. Mr. Cook later married Miss Arrinda M. Chandler, daughter 
of Aaron Chandler of Wilkinson County. She was born Nov. 25, 1824. They 
were married in Wilkinson County, Sept. 26, 1841. In the following list of 
children of Mr. Cook, all were born by his .second wife except the first 
named, who was born by his first wife, viz:

7. Emily M.	b. 1849, never married. Life-long crippie.
8. Sophronia	b. 1850, never married. Life-long cripple.
9. Sarah J.	b. 1851, never married. Life-long cripple.
10. Arkansas	b. 1853, m. W. Hansford Hughes.
11. Henry N.	b. 1855, m. Mary Ann Boyd.
12. Francis M.	b. 1858, m. - Chambliss.
13. Arrinda	b. 1860, m. John S. Ford.
14. Rachel	b. 1862, m. William. J. Lewis.

Mr. Cook removed from Wilkinson County to Berrien County about the time it 
was formed out of Lowndes; the Cook family being one of ten or twelve 
families to move in the 1850s from Wilkinson to Lowndes (now Berrien). He 
settled within sight of Empire Church, on lot of land 335, 10th district, 
on the place where his grandson, James M. Cook, age 83, now lives (1957). 
Mr. Cook died there Nov. 15, 1809, and his wife died Oct. 18, 1893. They 
were buried in the cemetery at Empire Church of which they were members.
