James Williams Petitions From: Lee Adair Date: May 29, 1999 I have recently obtained a photocopy of a petition circulated before 1780 in support of Colonel James Williams who was killed at the Battle of Kings Mountain. I have seen it called the Col. James Williams Petition and the Little River Brigade Petition. One of the originals is in the South Caroliniana Library and another is at Duke University. The copy that I have (from the South Caroliniana Library) is signed by 64 men, who _may_ have been from the area around what is now Spartanburg Co. The one at Duke (of which I have a transcript) has the signatures of 24 men from Laurens Co. It is my impression (correct me if I'm wrong) that a signatures on this petition would provide extremely good evidence for Revolutionary War service.
