I noticed this morning that there was quite a few messages regarding the
closing of the various National Archives Regional Offices. I have just
returned from the National Record Center in East Point, GA. While there, I
had the opportunity to talk with one of the supervisors there. I was told that
they were reviewing their options; one of which was to purchase land in
Palmetto, GA (about 10-15 minutes south of the present location). It is their
opinion that they will need to purchase a minimum of 7 acres of land to build
a new depository. They have run out of space at their present location and
there is no room for expansion. This is one of their options. But -- whatever
they decide to do, it won't be for 5 years. They do not anticipate closing
the East Point, GA location. I did mention that I had seen a message this
morning stating the Ft. Worth Archives had closed and she told me that she had
heard the same thing but was not aware that their records were going to be
sent to Atlanta. Her comment was that they do not have room to store the
records that they now have much less accept records from somewhere else. She
says it will be a while before anything is decided, that's why they are having
the meetings - to get public input.

Hope this helps to clear up part of the confusion.

Ida
