my thanks to everyone on the south carolina and sumter lists for their responses
to my questions.  i had printed off a list once that someone had posted on one
of the rootsweb mailing lists that showed when each of the counties became a
county.  that list said that clarendon county did not become a county until
1855.  thus, my confusion.
