May I ask an uneducated question?

I know some men crossed counties and sometimes state lines to join
troops. Was it common to cross many state lines? And how do you find out
if the person listed is your particular relative?

I have just started my search into Civil War info and there doesn't seem
to be much online for SC. Seems odd to me considering our part in the
War. So, as a novice could ya'll give me advice on where to look for
rosters and how to determine if the person you have found is the actual
person you are looking for? I think I've been to most online sites, but
have overlooked distant Confederate States thinking that it would have
been too far for a relative to travel to join the War. Did men join say
a VA troop that was passing through SC? Or travel to KY to fight there?
It just seems unlikely to me... but I know very little about war (born a
lover ).
