Cheraws District (aka Cheraws Precinct) existed from about 1769 to 1800. It was formed out of St. David's Parish. It encompassed the areas which became the Districts of Chesterfield, Marlboro, and Darlington. In 1791, Cheraws District was expanded to include Salem County. Cheraws District was generally bounded on the west by Lynches River (also called Lynches Creek). The exception to this general rule was when Salem County was formed from portions of Claremont and Clarendon Counties in 1791 it was made a part of Cheraws District even though it was to the west of Lynches River. In 1800, Cheraws District was abolished. The areas of old Cheraws District evolved into the modern day counties of Chesterfield, Marlboro, Darlington, and part of Florence. The Town of Cheraw is located in Chesterfield County. Records pertaining to Old Cheraw District might have become part of the records of the above mentioned modern counties. In addition, parts of Old Salem County are now part of modern Lee, Sumter, and Clarendon counties. So some Old Salem records might be found in any of those counties records. Those two maps cover about two-thirds of the area of Old Cheraws District. You will find DuBoses, Cokers, Carters, and other related families shown on the 1820 Darlington and Sumter District maps. Some of the Dubose sites shown on these maps include the lands of Zachariah, Seaborn, John, Daniel, Dr. Dubose, Dubose's Ferry, D. Dubose, P. Dubose, M.
