Subject: Charleston and sea coastal pilots From: Edgar Taylor Date: April 10, 1998 There appears to be little research done so far on the families and community of harbor and sea pilots in the Charleston area. I have found that a number of such families came down from Smithville - now named Southport - before the War between the States to take up the trade But there surely were others before thwm. The census of 1850 and later for Charleston give some of the names. But there must be BURIED information yet to be uncovered about the colonial pilots and later dayes. I am interested to hear from any one who had an ancestor who was a pilot. My ancestor Samuel Chapman was one as were the McDonalds - Trouts - and others.
