Subject: Re: Charleston From: Nancy Parr Date: November 19, 1998 Hello Stephen, It greatly saddens me to hear of all the massive 'new' construction in Charleston. I had the privilege of living there 1984-1988. We moved just before Hugo caused the massive destruction. I truly loved Charleston and all the wonderful people. It was a town of beautiful architecture and fascinating historical values. I began most of my genealogy research wile living in Charleston. The LDS center west of the Ashley River is awesome. My daughters were young and they have very vivid memories of sitting at my feet as I scrolled through all those microfilms :-) Our favorites times were spent down at the "Battery", sitting and observing all the beauty and richness of the area. We went on the carriage rides often because it seemed I couldn't get enough of the history of that area. The old cemeteries tucked away beside those incredible churches were a sanctuary. A testiment to times gone by. Oh, how I miss those days of wondering through thoses streets and meeting the flavorful vendors at the Market Square :-) Charleston will forever hold a special place in my heart. I've been back to visit twice since Hugo showed her rath and fury. I admired the will and determination of those strong people who refused to let their city die. Yet I shutter to think that 'modern technology' is creeping in and invading something so timeless.
