Subject: RE: CENSUS TRANSCRIBING, A BETTER WAY From: Derrell Oakley Teat Date: February 25, 2001 Hello All, As a one of the few who are willing to transcribe the census on line and one who has been searching a long time everything Tina said is correct. I have helped and done 2 by myself. So please volunteer your time and help us, if everyone only took a page to type...Just think of how quick we could finish. Thank you Tina! Very well said! I have actually completed 3 myself, and assisted with the proofreading of one that nobody wanted to touch. I also have 4 more I am going to complete. I do not consider myself a "poor volunteer". I am learning from the experience, and enjoying it, too! There are not enough good volunteers available. Good intentions do not give us results. We won't see the entire census online until those who can do it, volunteer and actually do the work. Not everybody will "place their few relatives" on the censuses, so that leaves huge gaps that hurt the whole. It is important to know who lived nearby, because they probably married into your lines in the future, so even though you think that it is only important to get the data on your own lines, you may be missing more than you know because of it. Those neighbors were involved in the lives of your relatives. They witnessed marriages, deaths, wills, deeds, births, helped to build fences, barns, etc., posted bonds and securities for marriages and probates, etc. They are just as important as those you know to be your own relatives for sure. Remember, their childrens spouses came from somewhere! Probably from the neighbors!
