I surmise that the problem is using USGS GNIS links shown in some archived email
messages. For example,
in the archived message found at
http://www.liszt.com/read/SCRoots-L/[email protected]
you will find several URLs like the following.
http://mapping.usgs.gov:8888/gnis/owa/GetDetail?tab=Y&id=1235897
But, if you click on the URL, you might find that the "&id=1235897" part may not
be added to the address used in your browser. Instead, you might find your
browser trying to connect with
http://mapping.usgs.gov:8888/gnis/owa/GetDetail?tab=Y.
One solution is to manually add the "&id=...." part shown in the archived
message to the end of the URL in your browser's address line.
Or, you could just go directly to http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html
and search there for the site you seek.
