Subject: CAUTHEN, William Columbus; M.D. From: R. W. Hughes Date: July 31, 1998 Two of the known children died from the typhoid fever epidemic which swept through the area in the middle 1860's. Notices of the deaths of both children were recorded in "THE LANCASTER LEDGER", volume XVI, page 27: "Died, March 1st, 1863, W C Cauthen, youngest son of Dr. W C and M J Cauthen, aged 6 years, 5 months and 23 days." "Died, Feb. 23d, 1863, A N J Cauthen, oldest daughter of Dr. W C and M J Cauthen, aged 3 years, 10 months and 23 days." Graduated from the Medical School of Transylvania College in Lexington, KY in 1847. Set up his office in one corner of his father's home in Hanging Rock. Elected to the South Carolina Legislature for 3 terms, serving from 1852-1858. On 23 Nov 1860 he was elected as the representative from Lancaster County to the South Carolina Secession Convention. On 20 Dec 1860, he signed the Ordinance of Secession. His name is engraved along with the other signers on the marble tablet which hangs in the lobby of the State House. NOTE: Other children of this marriage have been located. The two who died were the first two born. Many, many deaths were noted in the newspaper through this period from all age groups due to the typhoid fever. William died at age 39 years, 4 months, 14 days.
