Subject: CATES, James F.; I'm back From: Teesquare Date: July 10, 1998 Hi Folks, I have been searching for any information on a James F. CATES b ca. 1750's, possibly the son of Thomas CATE and grandson of Robert Cate of NC. James F. CATES was the father of Robert D. CATES of Shelbyville, NC (TN) area in late 1700's to early 1800's was the father of Wilson G. CATES b 1811 in Shelbyville, TN area moved to Muhlenburg Co, KY in 1836. This is very sketchy information and I wish I could furnish more info. So far I have not been able to find any trace of James F. CATES. If anyone has any information on this person, I would appreciate any assistance. I.m back on the mailing list after having a terrible series of computer crashes (2 in May and 5 in June) which caused the loss of a lot of save email messages, and the corruption of major programs and data. A freak system failure that I was unaware of scrambled approximately 400 files (326 email messages containing genealogy data) as they were being saved to floppy disk. You talk about a horror, some of the files that were saved to floppy disk during a two week period were critical backup files that have turned out to be virtually unrestorable and unusable. I finally threw up my hands and turned the machine off and went on vacation for 2 weeks. When I returned home from my vacation I installed the new Windows 98 Operating System that updated most of my programs, drivers, and repaired a lot of the damage to many of the corrupted files and programs, but could not remedy the damages to the 400 files and backups that were saved to floppies. So far I am very pleased with the new operating system and am very hopeful that I will never have the problems I have experienced during May and June again. I am very hopeful that I can retrieve the lost genealogy data obtained via the mailing lists by searching the Rootsweb archives.
