I had been told last year, when the course was still in development, that the name "cassique" did not refer to a particular indian or a particular tribe, but it was a generic term meaning chief. I've just assumed it was a term the white man gave to natives in the area. The only tribe I know of in our area is the Edisto tribe (which is not the same as the Edisto Beach area). The Edisto's consist of several bands, if I remember correctly, what was left of several local tribes that banded together, which included the Kiawah Indians.
