She was born February 12, 1840 in Lowndes Co, Georgia, and died December 16, 1894. Notes for WILLIAM A CARTER: William A. Carter was born Jan. 6, 1828, son of William Carter (Vol.V). He married Elizabeth Staten, daughter of Barzilla Staten. Mr. Carter lived in the Naylor district of Lowndes County near present Good Hope Baptist Church. He served as a Justice of Lowndes Inferior Court, 1861-65, and was Representative from his county in 1877. He died Dec. 6, 1900. His wife died Dec. 16, 1894. They were buried at Union Primitive Baptist Church, the old burial-ground of his parents and grandparents. Mr. Carter was a member of the Masonic fraternity for many years and was active in the three subordinate lodges he was a member of. He received his degrees in 1854, entering in as a charter member that year of St. John the Baptist Lodge, No. 184, at Troupville (now the lodge in Valdosta). Three years later he demitted and became a charter member of Alapaha Lodge No. 209, at Statenville, which was more convenient for him to attend. He was the first Senior Deacon in that lodge. In October, 1857, he demitted and became a charter member of Butler Lodge, No. 211, at Milltown (now Lakeland), which was only four or five miles from his home. He served as Junior Steward of that lodge, 1878, 1881, and as Senior Steward, 1882, 1883, and was a member at the dissolution of the lodge in 1883. Mr. Carter was one of the administrators of the estate of his wife's father, and later of the estate of his own father. He was considered in his day as one of the leaders in his county. He married SARAH KNIGHT August 28, 1854, daughter of JONATHAN KNIGHT and FRANCES STATEN. She was born March 01, 1838, and died April 24, 1898. Notes for ELIJAH A CARTER: Elijah A. Carter was born in Lowndes County, March 12, 1834, a son of George and Pollie Carter (Vol.I). He spent most of his life in the same community in Lowndes County where he was born. He was married Aug. 28, 1854, to Sarah Knight, a daughter of Jonathan Knight (Vol.IV) who was at the time living in Clinch county. She was born March 1, 1838, and died April 24, 1898. After marriage Mr. Carter lived and farmed in Clinch county until about 1863 and lived on a farm near Prospect Church. He then moved to Berrien County where the fourth child was born. But after about two years on a farm there he moved back to his old home community near Naylor, Lowndes County, where he bought a farm and lived until his death Jan. 11, 1923. JAMES S5 CARTER (JAMES4, JESSE3, GEORGE2, JACOB1) was born August 12, 1833 in Lowndes Co, Georgia, and died May 1920 in Echols Co, Georgia. He married SUSAN H MCALHANEY 1860. She was born 1836 in South Carolina, and died February 1921. Notes for JAMES S CARTER: James S. Carter, one of the twin sons of Hon. James Carter Vol.1) of Echols county, was born Aug. 12, 1833, in Lowndes County, and died at his home in Echols county, May 1920. He was married in 1860 to Susan H., daughter of Richard W. MeAlhaney. At the time of their marriage her parents were the proprietors of the first hotel or inn in Statenville which at the time had just been laid out and developed as a town and county-site of the new county. Mrs. Carter was born in 1836 in South Carolina. Mr. Carter was elected the first Sheriff of Echols county in January, 1859, serving two years. During the war he held the combined offices of Tax Collector and Receiver of Tax Returns, 1862,64. He then served an unexpired term, 1864-65, as a Justice of Peace in the 904th district (Statenville). He was a member of Echols Board of Education 1883-87 and 1991-93 and 1898-1900. He was elected Ordinary of his county in November, 1900, and assumed office Jan. 1, 1901, but resigned it Nov. 28, 1901. The 1860 Census shows his occupation as merchant and sheriff. In later years he owned a plantation near Statenville and farmed there until his death. His wife died in February, 1921. They were buried in the Carter cemetery. James S. Carter was a Mason, receiving his degrees in 1855 in St. John the Baptist Lodge, No. 184, at old Troupville. In 1857 he became a charter member of Alapaha Lodge No. 209 at "Troublesome" (or Statenville). He served as Junior Deacon of the lodge, 1859-60, and Senior Warden 1860-61, and afterwards held other lodge offices, and remained a member until his death. He married MEHALA WALKER November 07, 1855, daughter of JAMES WALKER and REBECCA STEPHENS. She was born November 30, 1837 in Lowndes Co, Georgia, and died January 13, 1913 in Echols Co, Georgia. Notes for JOHN A CARTER: John A. Carter, one of the twin sons of Judge James Carter (Vol.I), was born in Lowndes now Echols county, August 12, 1833, and died Nov. 10, 1919, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Dr. J.E.W. Smith, in Waycross. He was married Nov. 7, 1855, to Mehala, daughter of James and Mary R. Walker (Vol.I). She was born In Lowndes County, Nov. 30, 1837, and died Jan. 13, 1913, at her home near Statenville. Note: The said Mary J. Smith, wife of Dr. L.A. Carter, and the first-named J.E.W. Smith were brother and sister, and were Ist cousins to said Dr. J.E.W. Smith, all being grandchildren of Elder Job E. W. Smith (q.v.). John A. Carter enlisted in the Confederate Army in November, 1861, as a private in Co. "H", 26th Volunteer Georgia Regiment. He was wounded in the knee July 1, 1863, in the battle of Gettysburg, and was captured and spent eight months in Federal prison on Devils Island, N. Y. Thereafter, he was exchanged and then furloughed because of his disability, returning home. The knee became stiff and he was never able to rejoin his command. He used a walking-cane until his death on account of the stiff knee. Mr. Carter's fine farm was between Statenville and Lake Park. He was an influential citizen of his county in his day, as was his twin brother. He served as a County Commissioner, 1881-1883. He was also a member of the Echols Board of Education 1891-92. She was born 1837 in South Carolina, and died 1910 in Georgia. Notes for WILEY CARTER: Wiley Carter was born in Lowndes (now Echols) County, July 30,1836, a son of Judge James Carter. He was married in 1854 to Martha A. Fender, born 1837 in Barnwell District, S.C., daughter of William F. Fender of Lowndes County. Wiley Carter served as a Justice of Echols Inferior Court from 1860 until his death July 28, 1862. His wife died about 1910. They were buried in the Statenville town cemetery. Mr. Carter was a member of Alapaha Lodge, No. 209,F,&A.M., receiving his degrees in 1858; he served as Junior Deacon in the lodge from 1859 until his death. He married SUSAN LIGHTSEY 1851, daughter of SAMUEL LIGHTSEY and MARTHA. She was born Abt. 1831. Notes for JESSE D CARTER: Jesse Carter, son of John and Elizabeth Carter (Vol. ]EI), was born in Lowndes County in 1834. He grew up on his father's farm in the present Naylor district of Lowndes, and was married in 1851 to Miss Susan Lightsey whose parents, Samuel and Martha M. Lightsey (Vol. 1), lived in that portion of Lowndes that was cut into Echols in 1858, and only a few miles south of the Carter community. Mr. Carter lived on a farm near his father's after marriage, until he enlisted in the Confederate Army. He was a private in Co. "H", 26th Vol. Georgia Infantry Regiment, enlisting in August, 1861. Children are listed above under (80) Mary Ann Carter. 87. PERRYMAN5 CARTER (ISAAC4, JESSE3, GEORGE2, JACOB1) was born November 27, 1842 in Lanier, Georgia, and died July 28, 1928 in Georgia. He married ANN HOWELL May 14, 1865, daughter of JESSE HOWELL. She was born April 28, 1841, and died October 18, 1915. Notes for PERRYMAN CARTER: Perryman Carter was born in Lowndes County, Nov. 27, 1842, son of Isaac and Rachel Carter (Vol.III). He was married May 14, 1865 to Mrs. Annie Howell Carter, daughter of Jesse Howell (Vol.11) and widow of George Carter, a Confederate casualty, who was a son of William and Nannie Carter and a 1st cousin to Perryman Carter. Mr. Carter enlisted Sept. 17, 1861, in Co. "B", 18th Georgia Battalion of Infantry, and was elected 1st Lieutenant. After serving six months in that command he was discharged and enlisted in 1862 in Co. "H", 26th Georgia Regiment, a Lowndes County company, and served until the end of the war. He surrendered May 10, 1865, at Tallahassee, Fla. Returning home Mr. Carter married and bought a farm in 1867, on which he lived until his death, July 28, 1928. This farm was located three or four miles south of Milltown (now Lakeland), and is now in Lanier County, and became the property of his son, E. J. Carter who died in 1961. Mrs. Carter, the wife, was born April 24, 1841, and died Oct. 18, 1915. She and Mr. Carter were buried at Union Church. Children of PERRYMAN CARTER and ANN HOWELL are: i. FLORENCE6 CARTER, b.
