66.  JAMES G.4 CARTER (JESSE3, ISAAC2, JACOB1) was born January 14, 1844 in 
Georgia, and died May 07, 1906 in Georgia.  He married RHODA DAVIS, 
daughter of JOEL DAVIS and ROXIE KIRKLAND.  She was born January 01, 1851 
in Georgia, and died November 26, 1914 in Georgia.

Notes for JAMES G. CARTER:
James G. Carter was born in Appling County, January 14, 1833, a son of 
Jesse Carter (Vol.V). He was married about 1868 to Rhoda Davis, born 
January 1, 1851, in Appling (now Coffee) County, daughter of Joel Davis and 
wife, Roxie Kirkland Davis.

Mr. Carter died May 7, 1906. His wife died November 26, 1914. They were 
buried in Bacon County.

67.  JACOB H.4 CARTER (JAMES H.3, ISAAC2, JACOB1) was born September 10, 
1848 in Georgia, and died June 26, 1913 in Georgia.  He married MARY 
HOWARD.  She was born Abt. 1847, and died 1929 in Georgia.

Notes for JACOB H. CARTER:
Jacob Carter was born on September 10, 1848 in Appling County, Georgia. He 
was the son of James  and Elizabeth Jane (Spence) Carter (q.v.) and the 
grandson of Isaac and Lydia (Branch) Carter (Vol. IV), and great-grandson 
of Jacob Carter of South Carolina. His maternal grandparents were Joshua 
and Susan (Middleton) Spence (Vol.V).
Jacob's occupation was that of a farmer. He married Mary Howard born ca 
1847 in Georgia. Her mother was Mrs. Anna Howard. Her father may have been 
Henry Howard but this has not been proven.

Mr. and Mrs. Carter made their home in Pierce County, Georgia.
Jacob Carter died on June 26, 1913 and is buried in the Shiloh Cemetery in 
Blackshear, Georgia. Mary (Howard) Carter died in 1929 and is buried near 
Jacob.

68.  CIVILITY4 ROBESON (ELIZABETH3 CARTER, ISAAC2, JACOB1) was born 1813 in 
Georgia, and died 1845 in Florida.  She married STOGNER HARRIS, son of 
THOMPSON HARRIS and NANCY URSERY.  He was born 1808 in Georgia, and died 
1874 in Florida.

Notes for STOGNER HARRIS:
Stogner Harris, a son of Thompson Harris (Vol. I). was born in Bryan 
County, in 1808. He moved with his parents to Appling County in his youth, 
and was married there in 1827, to Civil (Civility) Robinson, daughter of 
John and Elizabeth Carter Robinson (Robeson). She was born 1811, and died 
about 1845.

In 1839, Mr. Harris moved from Appling to Lowndes County, and located near 
Cow Creek in the portion of the county cut into Clinch in 1850, and into 
Echols in 1858. He shortly afterwards moved to Duval County, Fla., where 
his children, John and Mary Frances were born. His wife died there, and Mr. 
Harris then married his first cousin, Rebecca Harris, born 1825 in Bryan 
County, daughter of his uncle, Hampton Harris. The marriage took place in 
Duval County, Sept. 10, 1846.

In 1848, Mr. Harris moved to Georgia and again located in Lowndes County in 
the same community where he had previously lived. About ten years later, he 
moved to Pierce County and bought lands near High Bluff Church in the part 
of Pierce cut into Brantley County in 1922. He lived there until after the 
Civil War when he moved again, this time to the south side of the 
Okefenokee Swamp, in Baker County, Fla., near the old Fort Moniae. lie died 
there about 1873-74.
Mr. Harris served in Capt. N. J. Holton's company of Appling County militia 
in the Indian War in 1838, and in 1840 he was Ist corporal in Capt. 
Jonathan Knight's company of Lowndes County militia. His two sons Robinson 
and Wm. C. Harris, volunteered March 4, 1862, in Co. "A", 50th Georgia Vol. 
Inf. Regiment. Robinson Harris was a private, and died in service, of 
disease, Dec. 2, 1862; and his brother served as 3rd corporal, and died of 
disease, Feb. 5, 1863. The war record of their brother, John, has not been 
obtained.
Mr. Harris was a Mason, and received his degrees in Traders Hill Lodge, No. 
196, at Traders Hill in Charlton County, in 1862.

69.  SABRA4 ROBESON (ELIZABETH3 CARTER, ISAAC2, JACOB1) was born 1819 in 
Georgia.  She married GEORGE CARTER, son of WILLIAM CARTER and MARGARET 
DURRENCE.  He was born 1816 in Georgia, and died Abt. 1882 in Georgia.

Notes for GEORGE CARTER:
George Carter of Appling County, was born in 1816 in Tattnall County, a son 
of William Carter (VolI). The family moved to Appling County about a year 
after its creation in 1818, and settlect near the Altahama River. His wife 
was Sabra, born 1819 in Tattnall County, daughter of John Robinson 
(Vol.111).

George Carter lived in Appling County until about 1838 when he moved to 
Ware County for a short stay, but returned to Appling a few years later. He 
served as a private in Capt. N. J. Holton's company of Appling County 
militia in 1838 in the Indian War. He died about 1882.

70.  MARY4 ROBESON (ELIZABETH3 CARTER, ISAAC2, JACOB1) was born 1825 in 
Georgia, and died Abt. 1890 in Georgia.  She married WILLIAM CARTER, son of 
WILLIAM CARTER and MARGARET DURRENCE.  He was born 1814 in Georgia, and 
died 1864 in CSA Service.

Notes for WILLIAM CARTER:
William Carter was born in Tattnall county in 1812, son of William and 
Margaret Carter (Vol.II). He was married in Appling county about 1835 to 
Mary ("Molsy") Roberson (or Robeson), born 1823 in Wayne county, daughter 
of John Robeson

Soon after marriage William Carter moved to Ware county, living there 
several years; he is shown in 1840 census living in the 719th district 
(which territory is now in Echols county). He next moved to near Waresboro, 
where he served as Justice of Peace, 451st district, 1841-44. He was a 
private in Capt. David J. Miller's company of Ware county militia, 1838-42, 
in the Indian War.
About 1845, Mr. Carter and family moved back to Appling county where he 
lived until his death, He served In the militia the last year of the civil 
war, and was killed in the battles around Atlanta in July, 1864. His widow 
survived about twenty-five years and died and was buried in what is now an 
old abandoned cemetery in an old field on the left of the post-road south 
of Ten-mile Baptist Church. She and Mr. Carter were members of Ten-mile 
Church.

71.  PAUL HAYNE5 CARTER (PAUL4, ISHAM3, JESSE2, JACOB1) was born December 
03, 1854 in Georgia, and died January 08, 1899 in Florida.  He married MYRA 
PAULINE KENNEDY July 24, 1878, daughter of EDWARD KENNEDY and MARY MATTOX. 
 She was born 1856.

Notes for PAUL HAYNE CARTER:
Paul Hayne Carter was born on December 3, 1854 in Appling County, Georgia. 
He was the son of Paul Carter and Susan Tillman Thomas (Vol. VI). He 
married Myra Pauline Kennedy on July 24,1878. She was born in 1856, the 
daughter of Edward Kennedy, Jr. and Mary M. Mattox.

Paul Hayne took ajunior law course in Athens and was admitted to the bar in 
1876. He practiced law in Baxley with his brother, James Isham Carter, in 
the law firm Carter and Carter. On April 20, 1886 he was appointed Judge of 
Appling County Court. Colonel Carter became a merchant in Baxley around 
1887 and in Surrency about 1890. Mr. Carter was a member of the Masonic 
order. Later he and his family moved to Chipley, Florida. Paul Hayne was 
fatally shot by Ruffis Harrell in an altercation in Chipley, Florida on 
January 8, 1899. Paul Hayne Carter is buried in Chipley, Florida. His wife 
Myra Pauline Kennedy, moved back to Appling County for a time and then 
returned to Marianna, Florida to live with her son, Paul Carter. She is 
buried in Chipley, Florida beside her husband.

72.  DAVID ROBERT5 CARTER (PAUL4, ISHAM3, JESSE2, JACOB1) was born February 
26, 1857 in Georgia, and died September 23, 1941 in Georgia.  He married 
ISABELLE KENNEDY, daughter of EDWARD KENNEDY and MARY MATTOX.  She was born 
December 18, 1852 in Georgia, and died April 29, 1938 in Georgia.

Notes for DAVID ROBERT CARTER:
David Robert Carter was born on February 26, 1857 in Appling County, 
Georgia. He was the son of Paul Carter (Vol. VI) and Susan Tillman Thomas. 
He married Isabel "Tead" Kennedy, born in Bryan County, Georgia on December 
18,1852, the daughter of Edward Kennedy, Jr. and Mary Mattox.

David Robert Carter attended Bradwell Institute in Hinesville, Georgia and 
studied medicine at the Atlanta Medical College, graduating there in 1883. 
He was a practicing physician and surgeon of Baxley, Georgia. David Robert 
was trustee for the Baxley school district in 1887. He also operated a drug 
store in Baxley and was the postmaster in Baxley from December 2, 1889 to 
March 2, 1894. Dr. Carter was Treasurer for Appling County in 1896. Isabel 
(Kennedy) Carter died on April 29, 193 8 and David Robert died on September 
23, 1941. Both are buried in the Ten Mile Baptist Church Cemetery in 
Appling County, Georgia.

73.  NANCY5 DAME (CATHERINE4 CARTER, ELMORE3, JESSE2, JACOB1) was born 1842 
in Montgomery County, Georgia, and died Abt. 1863.  She married HANSFORD 
DUNCAN O'QUINN 1862, son of SILAS O'QUINN and NANCY CRUMMEY.  He was born 
December 08, 1815 in Barnwell County, South Carolina, and died October 29, 
1900 in Berrien County, Georgia.

Hansford Duncan O'Quin was born in Barnwell District, South Carolina 
December 8, 1815, a son of Silas O'Quin (Vol. 1).  He was brought by his 
parents in boyhood to Appling County, Georgia, where he married Martha 
Branch, born 1827, daughter of Elias Branch (Vol. 1).  She died April 15, 
1861, and was buried in Rocky Lake Cemetery on the Altamaha River in 
Appling County.

Mr. O'Quin was married in 1862 to Nancy Dame, daughter of George Dame (Vol. 
1) of Clinch County.  She was born in 1842 in Montgomery County and died 
soon after the birth of her only child.

Mr. O'Quin then married Mrs. Matilda Joyce, a daughter of Rev. George W. 
Newbern of Clinch County and widow of Martin Joyce, a Confederate Army 
casualty.  She was born October 15, 1847 and died July 12, 1892.

Mr. O'Quin's fourth wife was a sister of the third wife; she was Mrs. Vicy 
Benton, widow of Abraham E. Smith, Jr., deceased, and of W. L. Benton 
(divorced), both of Clinch County.  They were married April 9, 1894.  She 
survived and died in 1911, and was buried by [beside] her first husband in 
the Homerville cemetery.
Mr. O'Quin taught school for a number of years in Appling, Wayne and Clinch 
Counties.  He came to Clinch County early in 1861 to teach a school, and 
his first wife died here shortly after.  He continued from then on to about 
1886 to be a resident of Clinch County.  He sold his farm below DuPont in 
Clinch and moved to Berrien County in the latter year, and continued to 
live there until his death October 29, 1900.  He was buried in the 
Nashville town cemetery where his third wife had been buried.
Mr. O'Quin's first public office was that of Clerk of Superior Court, 
Appling County, which he held 1846-1848.  He served as Receiver of Tax 
Returns of Appling, 1853-1854; Clerk Superior Court Clinch County, 
1868-1871; Postmaster at Homerville, 1868-1871; became the first County 
School Commissioner of Clinch County, serving 1871-1882, and was a member 
of the County Board of Education 1879-1884.  He was admitted to the bar, in 
Clinch Superior Court in 1867, but never did actively pursue the practice 
of law.
Mr. O'Quin was active in religious and fraternal affairs as well as public 
affairs and educational work.  He was originally a member of Ten-mile 
Baptist Church in Appling County, where he was converted and baptized.  He 
entered into the organization of the Homerville Baptist Church in October 
1867 as a charter member and deacon by transfer of membership from Appling 
County, and served as church clerk and deacon until 1869.  He then became a 
member of the Magnolia Baptist Church and served as clerk and deacon there. 
 After removing to Berrien County, he and his wife, Matilda, became members 
of the Nashville Baptist Church of which they died members.  He was the 
first Clerk of the Mell Baptist Association in 1887.  He received his 
Masonic degrees in 1857 in Holmesville Lodge No. 195 in Appling County, and 
continued a member there until 1876 when he affiliated with Cassia Lodge 
No. 224 at Homerville June 24, 1876.  In 1894 he was demitted and 
affiliated with Duncan Lodge No. 234 at Nashville and died a member there.

74.  WILLIS S.5 CARTER (JESSE4, ELMORE3, JESSE2, JACOB1) was born June 09, 
1840 in Georgia, and died August 18, 1918 in Georgia.  He married MARGARET 
ELMIRA WATERS, daughter of JOHN WATERS.  She was born August 12, 1839 in 
Georgia, and died November 27, 1907 in Georgia.

Notes for WILLIS S. CARTER:
Willis S. Carter, son of Jesse Carter, was born in Ware County June 9, 
1840. He was married in 1860 to Margaret Elmira Waters, born in Bulloch 
County, August 12, 1839, daughter of John Waters.

Mr. and Mrs. Carter were members of Hepzibah Baptist Church near their 
home. Mrs. Carter died November 27, 1907, and Mr. Carter died August 18, 
1918. They were buried at Hepzibah Church in marked graves.
