61.  MARIAH4 CARTER (ISAAC3, ELIJAH2, JACOB1) was born April 27, 1829 in 
Georgia, and died February 15, 1910 in Georgia.  She married JAMES R. 
ALLEN, son of RICHARD ALLEN and SARAH.  He was born December 29, 1827 in 
South Carolina, and died December 15, 1911 in Georgia.

Notes for JAMES R. ALLEN:
James R. Allen was born in Barnwell District, S. C., Dec. 29, 1827, a son 
of Richard Allen (see Vol. 1). He was brought by his parents to Lowndes 
County in childhood, and grew up in the present Naylor district. He was 
married there in 1846 to Miss Margaret M. Carter, daughter of Isaac Carter 
(see Vol. I), She was born in Lowndes County, April 17, 1829. Her parents 
were also from Barnwell District, S. C.

Mr. Allen served as Justice of Peace in the 661st district of Lowndes, 
1853-1861. He was Receiver of Tax Returns of Lowndes County, 1861-1864. In 
the last year of the awful Civil War when the call went out for all men in 
the state militia regardless of age, Mr. Allen was drafted along with the 
remainder of his company, designated as Co. 'F', 5th Georgia Regiment, 
State troops, serving until the end of the war.
Soon after the war, he moved to Echols county and resided there for about 
ten years, and during that time was Receiver of Tax Returns of that county, 
1873-1879. Moving back to his old home district in Lowndes, he was notary 
public and ex-officio justice of peace in the 661st district, 1879-1883. In 
the latter year, he sold out and moved across the Alapaha River into Clinch 
(now Lanier) County, and bought a farm in the Stockton district. He served 
as Justice of Peace in the 1052nd district twentyfour years, from 1885 
until 1909 when he retired, being succeeded by his son, I. W. Allen.
Mrs. Allen died at the family home, Feb. 15, 1910, and her husband died 
Dec. 15. 1911. They were buried in Wayfare Church cemetery.
Mr. Allen was a member of the Masonic fraternity several years, taking his 
degrees in 1858 in Butler Lodge, No. 211, at old Milltown (now Lakeland). 
Lodge records show he was suspended Aug. 20, 1870. No further lodge record 
appears, and no church record is known.

62.  GEORGE C.4 CARTER (JOHN3, ELIJAH2, JACOB1) was born September 01, 1830 
in South Carolina, and died January 06, 1889 in Georgia.  He married LYDIA 
TERRELL, daughter of JOHN TERRELL.  She was born January 05, 1828 in 
Georgia, and died January 22, 1911 in Georgia.

Notes for GEORGE C. CARTER:
George C. Carter, son of John Carter (Vol.11I), was born in South Carolina, 
Sept. 1st, 1830. He died at his home in Echols county, Jan. 6, 1889. He was 
married in 1851 to Lydia E., daughter of John Terrell (Vol.1). She was born 
in this state, Jan. 5, 1828, and died Jan. 22, 1911.

Mr. Carter was brought in his infancy by his parents to Lowndes County, and 
grew up there. In 1858, in the creation of Echols out of Lowndes, he was 
placed in the new county, and lived there until his death. He served as 
Tax-Collector of Echols County, 1868-1871, and as County Treasurer, 
1871-1873.
George C. Carter was a faithful member of Sardis Baptist Church for a 
number of years prior to his death. He was also a member of the Masonic 
order, receiving his degrees in 1865 in Alapaha Lodge, No. 209, at 
Statenville. He served as tiler of his lodge, 1869 to 1872, inclusive, and 
also held other lodge offices later, and died a member.
He and his wife were buried in the Carter Cemetery in Echols county.

63.  MARTIN TURNER4 CARTER (JOHN3, ELIJAH2, JACOB1) was born October 29, 
1832 in Georgia, and died August 30, 1922 in Georgia.  He married (1) OLIVE 
RENTZ, daughter of SAMUEL RENTZ.  She was born 1840, and died November 25, 
1917 in Georgia.  He married (2) NANCY DELOACH 1854 in Georgia, daughter of 
GENERAL DELOACH.  She died 1868 in Georgia.

Notes for MARTIN TURNER CARTER:
Martin Turner Carter was a son of John ("Jack") Carter (Vol.lII), and was 
born in Lowndes County, Oct. 29, 1832, not long after his parents had 
emigrated here from South Carolina. He died at his home in western Echols 
county, on Grand Bay, Aug. 30, 1922. He was married twice. His first 
marriage was in 1854 to Nancy, daughter of General DeLoach of Echols 
county.

After the death of the first wife in 1868, Mr. Carter married Mrs. Olive 
Lightsey, daughter of Samuel Rentz, (Vol.1) and widow of John J. Lightsey. 
She was born in 1840 and died Nov. 25, 1917.

Mr. Carter was a faithful Confederate soilder. He enlisted April, 1862, at 
Savannah, in Co. "K'', 32nd Georgia Inlantry Regiment, and served until 
February, 1865, when he was granted a sick furlough at Pocotaligo, S. C., 
and returned home. He was unable to rejoin his command when the surrender 
came two months later. He was granted a Confederate pension in 1912.
Mr. Carter and his two wives were buried at the nearby Carter cemetery. His 
first wife was the first person to be buried there; grave unmarked.

64.  DAVID4 CARTER (SAMUEL3, ELIJAH2, JACOB1) was born 1820 in South 
Carolina, and died 1891 in Florida.  He married ANNIE SHEAROUSE, daughter 
of GOTTLIEB SHEAROUSE and SALOME FRYERMOUTH.  She was born 1823 in Georgia, 
and died Abt. 1906 in Florida.

Notes for DAVID CARTER:
David Carter was born in Colleton District, S.C., in 1820, son of Samuel 
Carter. He was brought by his parents when he was a boy to Lowndes County, 
and lived there the remainder of his life. His wife was Ann C. Shearouse, 
born 1823 in Effingham County. daughter of Gottlieb Shearouse, Jr., and his 
wife Salome Fryermouth Shearouse. Her parents had moved to Lowndes from 
Effingham County and were living there in the 1840 Census, and about 1845 
moved on to Florida.

David Carter was a private in the Indian War, serving in Capt. Samuel E. 
Swilley's company, 2nd Regiment, Florida militia, June 16th to Dec. 16, 
1837, and again in 1838 in Capt. Jesse Carter's company of Lowndes County 
militia. His home and farm was near the present town of Lakeland (for many 
years known as Milltown). He died there in 1891, and his wife died about 
fifteen years later; they were buried at Union Primitive Baptist Church.

65.  SAMUEL4 CARTER, JR (SAMUEL3, ELIJAH2, JACOB1) was born August 05, 1831 
in South Carolina, and died January 06, 1882 in Georgia.  He married ELIZA 
J. CONNELL, daughter of SAMUEL CONNELL and MARY STEELE.  She was born April 
05, 1832 in South Carolina, and died February 04, 1905 in Georgia.

Notes for SAMUEL CARTER, JR:
Samuel Carter (Jr.) was born August 5, 183 1, in Barnwell District, S.C., a 
son of Samuel Carter (Vol.1). He was brought in his childhood by his 
parents when they moved to Lowndes County when they moved there. Soon after 
he was grown he left home and went to that section of Lowndes that was made 
into Berrien County in 1856, where he married in 1854 Eliza J. Connell, 
daughter of Samuel Connell (VoI.I.). She was born April 5, 1832, in 
Darlington District, S.C., and died Feb. 4, 1905.

The plantation home of Mr. Carter was located eight miles south of 
Nashville. He died there Jan. 6, 1882, and was buried in the Connell 
cemetery near Nashville. His wife survived twenty-three years and was 
buried in the Morris graveyard nearPleasant Church in Berrien County.
