Notes for ALEXANDER O'QUINN: Alexander O'Quin was born in Barnwell County, South Carolina April 17, 1819, son of Silas O'Quin (Vol. 1). He was brought to Appling County, Georgia, by his parents in 1821 and grew up and married and lived there until his death August 30, 1894. His wife by whom his children were born was Miss Susannah Dent, to whom he was married February 9, 1848. She was born April 15, 1827, and died December 10, 1879. Mr. O'Quin's second marriage was to Miss Mary Shaw of Liberty County on March 29, 1882. She was born March 22, 1840. There was no issue. The O'Quin plantation was near Odum, Georgia. DAVID4 O'QUINN (NANCY3 CRUMMEY, REBECCA2 CARTER, JACOB1) was born March 12, 1821 in Barnwell County, South Carolina, and died April 19, 1884 in Clinch County, Georgia. He married MATILDA HIGGS in Appling County, Georgia, daughter of WILLIAM HIGGS. She was born December 08, 1821 in Tattnall County, Georgia, and died July 24, 1895 in Clinch County, Georgia. Notes for DAVID O'QUINN: [Olisting.FTW] David O'Quin, a son of Silas O'Quin (Vol. 1), was born in Barnwell District, South Carolina March 12th, 1821. Later the same year, his parents moved to Appling County, Georgia, where he grew to manhood and married. His wife was Matilda, daughter of William Higgs (Vol. 1). She was born December 8th, 1821, in Tattnall County. Mr. O'Quin served as a Justice of Appling Inferior Court, 1845-1846. In 1853, he sold out his farm in Appling County and moved to Clinch County and located at Magnolia, the then county seat. He bought town lots there and built a home and small store. The home became a public inn or hotel in the little village, and continued as such until the courthouse was moved to the new town of Homerville in 1860. Mr. O'Quin continued to live there and after the town disappeared, he became the owner of the entire town site and some adjoining lands, and farmed and lived there until his death April 19, 1884. Mrs. O'Quin died July 24, 1895. Both were buried in the Homerville town cemetery. Mr. O'Quin was Sheriff of Clinch County 1854-1856, and served as Clerk of Clinch Superior Court 1856-1868. He filled the same position again by appointment ad-interim in December 1880 when a vacancy occurred, serving two months. Mr. O'Quin was N. P. Exo. J. P., in his district, the 970th, From 1876 until his death. He served as Postmaster at Magnolia, 1859-1860, having been appointed August 20, 1859. When Magnolia (now Cassia) Lodge, No. 224, F. and A. M., was organized at Magnolia in 1858, he became a charter member and continued a member until his death. He filled the following lodge offices: Secretary, 1859; Senior Deacon, 1860; Worshipful Master, 1866; Junior Deacon, 1872; Senior Warden, 1869, 1873, 1874, 1877. When the state militia was reorganized and re-activated at the beginning of the Civil War, he was elected captain in the 970th district and commissioned September 1, 1861. He married (1) CORNELIA LONG 1858, daughter of DAVID LONG. She was born September 13, 1837 in South Carolina, and died December 25, 1863. He married (2) ANNE BROWN September 22, 1865 in Clinch County, Georgia, daughter of HENRY BROWN and ELIZABETH DAVIS. She was born May 03, 1840 in Bulloch County, Georgia, and died May 07, 1897 in Wayne County, Georgia. Notes for GEORGE WASHINGTON O'QUINN: George Washington O'Quin was born in Appling county, March 15, 1825, son of Silas O'Quin (Vol. 1). He did not marry until he was thirtythree years old. His first wife was Cornelia Long, born Sept. 13, 1837, in South Carolina, daughter of David Long of Appling county. She died Dec. 25,1863. By her two children were born . The second marriage was in Clinch county Sept. 22, 1865, to Anne Brown, born in Bulloch county May 3,1840, daughter of Henry Brown (Vol. III) of Clinch county. They had one child. Geo. W. O'Quin lived in that portion in the 4th land district of Appling county which was detached and added to Wayne County in 1871-2. His home and farm was a few miles west of Screven, Wayne county. His second wife died May 7, 1897, and he died July 31, 1910. They were buried in O'Quin Church cemetery. He and his family were all members of Baptist Church, and he was a deacon for many years in the Screven Baptist Church. The son, Dr. John H. O'Quin,. lived and practiced his profession at Patterson, Pierce County, and had a very large and heavy practice for some years. Children of GEORGE O'QUINN and CORNELIA LONG are: i. O'Quinn, youngest son of the sainted Silas O'Quinn was born in Appling County March 14, 1827. He seems to have stayed with his parents until he was over twenty-five years of age, and was married about 1855 to Nancy Carter, a sister of the wife of his brother, Stephen O'Quinn (Vol. V). She was born in South Carolina about 1827. By her there were three children born . She died in Baker Co., Fla. about 1862, and in 1863 at or near Lake Butler, Fla. Mr. O'Quinn married Susan F. Bryan, born in Florida, Dec. 5, 1845. By her seven children were born . Mr. O'Quinn moved to Columbia (now Baker) Co., Fla., about 18556, and was J.P. in Columbia County 1857-1859. Following his second marriage he returned to Georgia and located in northern Chariton County near or on the "Buffalo" in present Brantley County. He was Coroner of Charlton County, 1864-66, and was sheriff one term, 18711873. He died at his home April 17,1907. His widow died August 17, 1920. He married ANGIE DELORES DELOACH May 02, 1847, daughter of ABRAHAM DELOACH. She was born December 26, 1826 in Georgia. Notes for JOHN J. CARTER: John J. Carter was born in Barnwell District, S. C., April 16, 1821, son of Isaac and Elizabeth Carter. He came with his parents to Lowndes County in his childhood, and was married there May 2, 1847, to Angeline (Angie) DeLoach, daughter of Abraham DeLoach. She was born in Tattnall County, Dec. 26, 1826. Mr. Carter served as a private in the Indian War, in Capt. Samuel E. Swilley's company, 2nd Regiment, Florida Militia, June 16 to Dec. 16, 1837; also in Capt. Jesse Carter's company of Lowndes County Militia, July 1st to Oct. 15, 1838. He was granted an Indian War pension in 1893, and drew it until his death, May 28, 1904. His wife died Feb. 2, 1914. They were buried in Union Church cemetery near Milltown (now Lakeland). Mr. Carter was a member of the Masonic fraternity, with his membership in Butler Lodge, No. 211, at Milltown (now Lakeland). He received his degrees in 1860, and was dimitted in 1867 but transferred back March 16, 1872. He continued a member until the dissolution of the lodge about 1885.
