DUKES, daughter of JOHN DUKES. She was born 1818 in South Carolina. Notes for RICHARD CARTER: Richard Carter was born in Colleton District, S. C., near Carter's Ford, in 1812, son of Samuel Carter and wife Jincy Wilson Carter. His parents moved to Appling County in his young manhood and he was married there to Elizabeth A. Dukes, born 1818 in South Carolina, daughter of John Dukes of Tattnall County. Mr. Carter served as a corporal in Capt. N. J. Holton's company of Appling County militia in the Indian War in 1838-39, and as 1st Lieutenant of the 443rd district militia, 1839-1843. He served as a Tax-Collector of Appling County, 1832-34, Justice of Inferior Court, 1845-46, and again 1853-57; and as Sheriff of Appling County, 1866-68. About the time his term as Sheriff expired, Mr. Carter moved to Brooks County where he bought a farm in the Dixie district, near Evergreen Church, and he lived there until his death in 1889. He was married April 4, 1867 to Nancy America Carter, born September 30, 1845, a daughter of Richard Carter (Vol.V). To them the following children were born: 1. He joined the Baptist Church and was ordained to the ministry May 21, 1881. He was a missionary for Mercer Association for six years, and he worked along the railroad as a missionary for four years. He served as a pastor for the following churches: Okapillo, Brooks County, I year; Pleasantville, Colquitt County, 3 years; Buckcreek, Colquitt County, 5 years; Moultrie, I year; Mt. Zion, Colquitt County, 9 and one-half years; Crossland and Sharon Station, Colquitt County, 2 years; Isabella, Worth County, 2 years; Sumner, Worth County, 5 years; Ty Ty, 7 years; Enigma, Berrien County, 4 years; Alapaha, 3 years; Willacoochee, 7 years; Pearson, 3 years; Waresboro, 2 years; Union Springs, Dougherty County, 3 years, Richmond, Dougherty County, 2 years; Antioch, Lee County, 2 years; Leslie, Sumter County, 2 years; Newhope, Sumter County, 4 years; Bethel, Sumter County, 2 years; Andersonville, 7 years; Ellaville, 3 years. He was also a preacher in Tifton, 15 months before the church was organized there. He was in a mission in Los Angeles California for one and one half years, and he organized a church at Long Beach, California. He formed two churches in Colquitt County from 1882-1883. Solomon E. STEPHEN4 O'QUINN (NANCY3 CRUMMEY, REBECCA2 CARTER, JACOB1) was born January 08, 1814 in Barnwell County, South Carolina, and died August 01, 1886 in Columbia County, Florida. He married MARY CARTER 1838 in Appling County, Georgia, daughter of JACKSON CARTER. She was born September 27, 1814 in Barnwell County, South Carolina, and died April 01, 1887 in Columbia County, Florida. Notes for STEPHEN O'QUINN: [Olisting.FTW] Stephen O'Quinn was born Jan. 8, 1814, in Barnwell District, S. C., son of Silas O'Quinn (Vol.I). He came in his boyhood with his parents to Appling County, and was married there in 1838, to Mary ("Pollie") Carter, daughter of Jackson Carter. She was born in Barnwell District, S. C., Sept. 27, 1814. Mr. O'Quinn and family lived in the 443rd militia district of Appling County. He sold out his farm and home there and they moved about 1867 to Baker County, Fla. About ten years later they moved again, to a farm which he bought located about four miles from Lake City, Fla., in Columbia county. He died there Aug. 1, 1886. His wife died Apr. 1, 1887. They were buried at Friendship Baptist Church, Appling County. The son, George W. O'Quinn, enlisted as a private in Co. "A", 1st Regiment, Ist Brigade, Georgia State Troops, Oct. 3, 1861, and was m1st. ered out April, 1862. He then enlisted Apr. 18, 1862, in Co. "K", 54th Volunteer Georgia Infantry, and on July 30, 1862, was transferred to Co. "C", 1st Battalion, Georgia Sharpshooters. The company roll shows him "present, May, June, 1863" with no later entry; however, he was killed in action Sept. 21, 1863, in the battle of Chicamauaga, Tenn. He married (1) MARTHA BRANCH in Appling County, Georgia, daughter of ELIAS BRANCH. She was born 1827, and died April 15, 1861 in Appling County, Georgia. He married (2) MATILDA NEWBERN, daughter of GEORGE W. NEWBERN. She was born October 15, 1847, and died July 12, 1892 in Appling County, Georgia. He married (3) NANCY DAME 1862, daughter of GEORGE DAME and CATHERINE CARTER. She was born 1842 in Montgomery County, Georgia, and died Abt. 1863. He married (4) VICY BENTON April 09, 1894. She died 1911. Notes for HANSFORD DUNCAN O'QUINN: [Olisting.FTW] Hansford Duncan O'Quin was born in Barnwell District, South Carolina December 8, 1815, a son of Silas O'Quin (Vol. 1). He was brought by his parents in boyhood to Appling County, Georgia, where he married Martha Branch, born 1827, daughter of Elias Branch (Vol. 1). She died April 15, 1861, and was buried in Rocky Lake Cemetery on the Altamaha River in Appling County. Mr. O'Quin was married in 1862 to Nancy Dame, daughter of George Dame (Vol. 1) of Clinch County. She was born in 1842 in Montgomery County and died soon after the birth of her only child. Mr. O'Quin then married Mrs. Matilda Joyce, a daughter of Rev. George W. Newbern of Clinch County and widow of Martin Joyce, a Confederate Army casualty. She was born October 15, 1847 and died July 12, 1892. Mr. O'Quin's fourth wife was a sister of the third wife; she was Mrs. Vicy Benton, widow of Abraham E. Smith, Jr., deceased, and of W. L. Benton (divorced), both of Clinch County. They were married April 9, 1894. She survived and died in 1911, and was buried by [beside] her first husband in the Homerville cemetery. Mr. O'Quin taught school for a number of years in Appling, Wayne and Clinch Counties. He came to Clinch County early in 1861 to teach a school, and his first wife died here shortly after. He continued from then on to about 1886 to be a resident of Clinch County. He sold his farm below DuPont in Clinch and moved to Berrien County in the latter year, and continued to live there until his death October 29, 1900. He was buried in the Nashville town cemetery where his third wife had been buried. Mr. O'Quin's first public office was that of Clerk of Superior Court, Appling County, which he held 1846-1848. He served as Receiver of Tax Returns of Appling, 1853-1854; Clerk Superior Court Clinch County, 1868-1871; Postmaster at Homerville, 1868-1871; became the first County School Commissioner of Clinch County, serving 1871-1882, and was a member of the County Board of Education 1879-1884. He was admitted to the bar, in Clinch Superior Court in 1867, but never did actively pursue the practice of law. Mr. O'Quin was active in religious and fraternal affairs as well as public affairs and educational work. He was originally a member of Ten-mile Baptist Church in Appling County, where he was converted and baptized. He entered into the organization of the Homerville Baptist Church in October 1867 as a charter member and deacon by transfer of membership from Appling County, and served as church clerk and deacon until 1869. He then became a member of the Magnolia Baptist Church and served as clerk and deacon there. After removing to Berrien County, he and his wife, Matilda, became members of the Nashville Baptist Church of which they died members. He was the first Clerk of the Mell Baptist Association in 1887. He received his Masonic degrees in 1857 in Holmesville Lodge No. 195 in Appling County, and continued a member there until 1876 when he affiliated with Cassia Lodge No. 224 at Homerville June 24, 1876.
