29. CATHERINE4 CARTER (ELMORE3, JESSE2, JACOB1) was born 1800, and died
1870 in Georgia. She married GEORGE DAME, son of GEORGE DAME and MARY
GREEN. He was born March 08, 1784 in Virginia, and died March 1867 in
Georgia.

Notes for GEORGE DAME:
GEORGE DAME was born in Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia,
March 8, 1784, son of George and Mary (Green) Dame. The elder Dame was a
Revolutionary soldier and furnished supplies to the cause: see Mrs. Olivia
Dame Barnhill, D.A.R. No. 377362, et. al. The elder Dame died in January,
1806, leaving a will which was probated in Middlesex County, Virginia,
January 27th, 1806. The widow and sons, John B., Charles, Richard and
George Dame, all moved to Georgia and settled in 1808 at or near what later
came to be known as Dame's Ferry in Jones County, where the widow died June
29, 1832. George Dame, the subject, after a short stay, returned to
Virginia. He served in the War of 1812 in Capt. John Waller's Company of
the 9th Regiment, Virginia Militia, later transferred to the 61st Regiment.
In 1814, George Dame came back to Georgia and lived awhile at Dame's Ferry.
Then he was in Augusta a short time. He next went to Washington County,
Georgia, where he met Miss Catherine Carter, daughter of Elmore and Delilah
(West) Carter, and they were married in 1818. She was born in 1788 in
Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and died in 1870.

After marriage, George Dame and his wife settled about 2-1/2 miles east of
old Bethsaida Church in Emanuel County. Later they moved to Long Pond in
Montgomery County about 1840, where the family lived until 1859-1860 when
Mr. Dame and wife and minor children moved to Clinch County and settled in
the Magnolia District. Some of the married children had already moved to
Clinch. Mr. Dame bought half of Lot of Land No. 298, 12th land district,
and lived there until his death in March 1867. Mrs. Dame died three years
later. Both were buried in a small family burial ground on the home place.
The graves of George and Catherine Dame remained unmarked until 1949 when
descendants got together, raised funds and erected a fine memorial stone at
the head of the two graves, with marble slabs over each grave. On
September 3, 1949, there was a reunion of descendants at the old cemetery,
and a short program was had honoring the old pioneer couple. Hon. A. J.
Gibbs, 82-year-old Tax Collector of Clinch County, was the only grandchild
present, he being one of two who survive. He occupied a prominent place on
the program. "The Dame Family Association" was organized with Dr. George
A. Dame as President, and it was voted to have annual gatherings of
descendants. Dr. Dame is Director of the Bureau of Local Health Service,
Florida State Board of Health.
George Dame, the subject, served as 2nd Lieutenant in the Emanuel County
Militia, 53rd Militia District, 1827-1830. He served as Justice of Peace
in the 276th District, Montgomery County, 1849-1853. He was the
administrator on the estate of his wife's father in Montgomery County in
1838-39.
George Dame, Sr., was a Revolutionary soldier though no record in Virginia
of his service has been found. That he was such a soldier is proved by the
fact that in the 1827 land lottery of Georgia his widow, Mrs. Mary Dame,
was certified as eligible to participate in the Lottery as the widow of a
Revolutionary soldier. The original list of names is of file in the office
of Ordinary of Jones County. It does not appear that she was a "fortunate
drawer" in the Lottery.
