17. WILLIAM3 CARTER (GEORGE2, JACOB1) was born Abt. 1785 in South
Carolina, and died Abt. 1855 in Georgia. He married MARGARET DURRENCE,
daughter of WILLIAM DURRENCE.

Notes for WILLIAM CARTER:
William Carter, the first sheriff of Appling County, was born in South
Carolina, Colleton District, in 1795, a son of George Carter and a brother
of Capt. Jesse Carter (see Vol. 1). He came with his father to Tattnall
County about 1810, thence to Appling County in 1819, where he lived until
his death about 1855.
William Carter's wife's maiden name cannot be learned. They were married
evidently in Tattnall County but no record appears there of the marriage.

Mr. Carter was Sheriff of Appling County in 1820-1822, and then served 1823
as Representative in the legislature from his county. He was a private in
the Indian War in 1838 in Capt. N. J. Holton's company of Appling County
militia.
His home was near Stephen O'Quin's farm in Appling County.

19. NANCY3 CRUMMEY (REBECCA2 CARTER, JACOB1) was born July 03, 1789 in
South Carolina. She married SILAS O'QUINN, son of ALEXANDER O'QUINN. He
was born July 24, 1788 in North Carolina, and died 1879 in Appling County,
Georgia.

SILAS O'QUIN was the progenitor of the large and influential O'Quin family
of Appling and Wayne counties with branches in other counties of the
Wiregrass. He was born July 24, 1788, in North Carolina, and was a son of
Alexander O'Quin. He came, probably with his parents, to Barnwell
District, South Carolina, where he seems to have lived until he came to
Georgia. He married Miss Nancy Crummey, born 1788 South Carolina, daughter
of Stephen Crummey, R.S., of Colleton District, South Carolina. Her mother,
Mrs. Rebecca Crummey, was a sister of Isaac Carter and others of the Carter
family who moved to Appling County about 1820.

Mr. O'Quin and his family moved to Appling County, Georgia, in December,
1821 and settled near what later became 10-Mile-Creek Baptist Church. He
and his wife were members of the Baptist Church in South Carolina, and one
of the first things to engage their attention after getting his home built
and a field cleared up for cultivation was the building of a house of
worship. He was said to have cut the first poles for the erection of the
first house of worship of 10-Mile-Creek Baptist Church. He and wife and
all of his children became members of the church, and until this day all
the O'Quin descendants have uniformly adhered to the Baptist faith.
Mr. O'Quin became a leading citizen of Appling County in his day. He
served as Justice of the Inferior Court of Appling County 1832-1887, and as
County Surveyor 1830-1840 and again 1842-1846. He was Justice of Peace of
the 443rd district, Appling County, 1841-1842.

20. ISAAC3 CARTER (ELIJAH2, JACOB1) was born May 18, 1792 in South
Carolina, and died May 01, 1881 in Florida. He married (1) ELIZABETH
DAVIS. She was born June 10, 1778 in South Carolina, and died June 28,
1870 in Florida. He married (2) POLLIE COX.

Notes for ISAAC CARTER:
ISAAC CARTER was born in Colleton district, South Carolina, May 18, 1792,
son of Elijah Carter. The latter died about 1875 at his home in Barnwell
District, South Carolina, at the age of 107 years. In 1829-1830, Isaac
with his brothers, John, Elijah and Samuel, moved to Lowndes County,
Georgia, where others of the family connection had already moved. They
settled on the west side of the Alapaha River in what is now Lanier and
Lowndes counties, and Isaac settled near his cousin, Jesse Carter, and near
Union Church on the banks of the Alapaha. Five acres of his land were
given by Isaac Carter for the cemetery which is now at the church.
Isaac Carter married Mrs. Elizabeth Davis Ganos, widow of Benjamin Ganos,
of South Carolina and mother of Capt. Benjamin C. Ganos, of Lowndes County,
who commanded a company of Lowndes County militia during the Indian War.
She was born June 10, 1788, and died June 28,1870, and was buried at Union
Church (grave unmarked). To her and Isaac Carter were born only three
children, all born in South Carolina.

These three children grew to maturity and married in Lowndes County and
lived there all their lives except Mrs. Allen and her family. Mrs. Allen
and her family later moved across the Alapaha River into what was formerly
Clinch but now Lanier County, where she died.
The late J. P. Carter, of Naylor, and I. W. Allen, of Stockton, were
grandsons of Isaac and Elizabeth Carter.
Mrs. Carter was a member of Union Church and was baptized into its
membership December 12, 1829. She died a member.
After his first wife's death, Isaac Carter, over the objections of his
sons, married again. His second wife was Miss Pollie Cox, born 1848 in
Georgia, daughter of Samuel D. Cox, and she at the time of marriage was
only about 25 or 26 years old and he was about 78 or 79 years old. There
were two children by the second wife. Due to differences arising between
him and his sons concerning his second marriage, the elder Carter sold out
his fine two-story home and farm in the Naylor district of Lowndes county
about 1875 and moved to Florida where he died May 1, 1881. Descendants here
today have lost trace of the two children by the last marriage and do not
remember their names or where they lived.

Children of ISAAC CARTER and ELIZABETH DAVIS are:
59.	i.	JOHN J.4 CARTER, b. April 16, 1821, South Carolina; d. May 28, 1904,
Georgia.

Georgia.

21. JOHN3 CARTER, SR (ELIJAH2, JACOB1) was born 1794 in South Carolina,
and died Abt. 1880 in Echols Co, Georgia. He married LAVINA 1825 in South
Carolina.

Notes for JOHN CARTER, SR:
John Carter who usually signed his name as John Carter, Sr., to distinguish
himself from his first cousin, John Carter (Vol. 1), was born in Colleton
District, S, C., in 1794, a son of Elijah Carter. He was married there
about 1825 and his wife was named Lavina, born 1799 in South Carolina, but
her maiden name is unknown.

Mr. Carter removed from his old home in South Carolina or near Little
Saltehatchie River to Lowndes County, Ga., in 1830. His home was cut out of
Lowndes into Echols County in 1858, and he died there about 1880. His wife
died soon after. They were buried in the Carter Graveyard not far from
their home; graves unmarked.
Mr. Carter was a lst.Lieutenant in the militia in the 661st district of
Lowndes County, 1832-33, and served as ensign in the same company, 1835-39.
He served an enlistment as a private under Capt. Samuel E. Swilley in the
2nd Regiment, Florida militia, June 16th to Dec. 16, 1837, in the Indian
War.
John Carter, Sr., was baptized into the membership of Union Primitive
Baptist Church; August 9, 1840; and the next year, on June 9, 1841, was
dismissed by letter with others, to join in the constituting of Antioch
Church which was much nearer his home. He became a charter member of
