108. LAFAYETTE ALONZO6 CARTER (JOHN A5, JAMES4, JESSE3, GEORGE2, JACOB1)
was born November 28, 1858 in Echols Co, Georgia, and died 1939. He
married MARY JANE SMITH 1886. She was born 1860 in Florida, and died 1956.

Notes for LAFAYETTE ALONZO CARTER:
Dr. Lafayette Alonzo Carter was born November 28, 1858 in Echols County,
Georgia a son of John A. Carter and Mehala Walker. In 1886 he married Mary
Jane Smith, born in 1860. She was the daughter of John Fredrick Smith and
Sarah Lanier McCall of Hamilton County, Florida.

Dr. Carter graduated in dentistry and practiced this profession in North
Florida and South Georgia for a few years, but realizing this line was not
his real calling, he began the study of medicine at Vanderbilt University
where he graduated with high honors. He took several post graduate courses
at the Polyclinic in New York.
He settled in Berrien County where he practiced medicine for over 45 years.
His office was in the McLamb Building in Nashville. Dr. Carter was one of
the most prominent physicians in South Georgia, and was a surgeon of note,
having performed the second successful appendix operation in the State.
During his long and successful career, he was not only active in his
profession, but was also a leading citizen and philanthropist.
He was organizer and president of the first bank in Nashville. Dr. Carter
also took an active part and interest in the Masonic Order of South
Georgia.
Like many other doctors, Dr. Carter was greatly overworked during the flu
epidemic of World War 1. The long hours and exposure badly damaged his
health. After this, until his death in 1939, the Carters spent their
winters in Florida. Mrs. Carter lived a long active life of 94 years, dying
in 1956. Both are buried in the Old Nashville Cemetery, along with two
children and a grandchild.

Thomas Richard Altman was born on August 7,1859. He went by the name
"Richard" and was the son of Thomas Altman (1831-1919) (q.v.) of Pierce
County. His mother was Olive (Winn) Altman. Olive was the daughter of
Joseph J. Winn (Vol IV). She was born on November 20,1832 and died on
September 11, 1903 and is buried in the Winn Cemetery. Richard's
grandparents were Thomas Altman (1786-1838) of Wayne County and his wife,
Lucy (Leigh) Altman. Richard married Elizabeth Dowling, the daughter of
Darling Wesley Dowling and his wife, Mary (Harris) Dowling (Vol Vl). Lucy
(Leigh) Altman was born about 1865. Richard and Elizabeth were married on
March 14,1883.

Richard Altman died on December 25,1904. His marked grave in the Winn
Cemetery in Pierce County shows his birth date as August 7, 1860, which
agrees with the 1880 census. However, the 1860 census, taken in June of
that year shows him ten months old so the 1859 birth year must be right.
