census of Pierce County as Thomas) was born on February 14, 1874 in the
part of Pierce County, Georgia that was later cut into Bacon County,
Georgia. He was the first son and second child of Isaac Carter (1832-1907)
and his wife Nancy (Harrison) Carter, and lived all of his life in that
county. He was married in 1902 to Ocie Taylor, also a native Georgian.

Friendship Methodist Episcopal Church South (now the Friendship United
Methodist Church) and about two miles from Coffee, Georgia and

Luther Alexander Carter was born February 27, 1874 in Cumberland County,
North Carolina. His parents were John Archie Carter and Elizabeth Jackson

into Bacon County, Georgia, before 1900. There he met and married Mary
Kizzie Carter (no relation) on February 4, 1900. She was the daughter of
Isaac and Nancy Harrison Carter.

Luther Carter moved to Coffee, Georgia in 1896. He had heard of Mr. Coffee
who operated the turpentine business there and sought a job with him.
According to his son, Hoke S. Carter, Luther Carter's first job there was
weeding boxes. For several years, at various times, he worked in
turpentine, being a woods rider for much of that time.
An entirely different family of Carters had migrated to South Georgia many
years prior to this time led by George Carter (RS). They were part of a
huge group of the name, now numbering in the thousands, who came from South
Carolina and spread all across Southeast Georgia. Luther's wife, Mary
Kizzie Carter, born May 27, 1876, was a great granddaughter of George
Carter (RS).
Mr. Carter was a large man and quite strong in his active years. To support
his family he engaged in several occupations. These included clearing and
operating a farm and continued work in turpentine. He cut crossties for the
railroad, drove a school bus and had a weekly fish route for a time.

Notes for PHILIP MARION CARTER:
Philip Marion Carter was born in Appling County, a son of Richard Carter
(Vol.V), and Elizabeth Dukes. According to his obituary, written by his
son, Willie W. Carter, Philip Marion was born January 19, 1844; his age as
reported in census records implies a year of birth of 1840 or 1841, and his
Civil War records suggest a year of birth of 1842. He was probably named
for his father's brother, Philip Marion Carter, who was killed in 1838
while in service against the Indians.
Philip Marion Carter enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861. His service
records show him on October 10, 1861, as Ist Corporal of Company "K", 2nd
Regiment, I st Brigade Georgia State Troops. He mustered out of this unit
in April, 1862, but then enlisted as a private in Company "B", 54th Georgia
Infantry Regiment. His older brother, George M. Carter, also enlisted in
this unit, as did a number of Carters from Appling County.
Philip Marion Carter stayed with this unit throughout the war, rising to
the rank of Ist corporal in Company "K" by the end of the war. The 54th
Georgia was part of Mercer's Brigade, which spent the first few years of
the war on duty in and around Savannah. During this period, the 54th
Georgia saw service at Battery Wagner, recently portrayed in the film,
Glory (the timing of their service at Battery Wagner is not yet known
precisely, and may not have occurred at the time of the action portrayed in
the film). In the spring of 1864, the brigade left Savannah and joined the
Army of Tennessee, which was north of Atlanta engaged in the defense of
Georgia. While with the Army of Tennessee, Philip Marion Carter fought in
the battles of Blue Ridge, Resaca, Cartersville, New Hope Church, Kennesaw
Mountain, Atlanta, all in north Georgia, and Franklin, near Nashville,
Tennessee. He surrendered in Tallahassee at the end of the war.
Other than his service in the war, Philip Marion Carter lived his entire
life in Appling County. After the war, he married Eliza Tomberlin, who was
born May 30,1849, the daughter of Thomas Tomberlin (Vol.V) and Mary
Roundtree.

Throughout his adult life, Philip Marion Carter was a farmer in the
Memorial Freewill Baptist Church Community of Appling County, located about
five miles southeast of Surrency off of Georgia Highway 121. He died on
January 10, 1912, and Eliza died on July 8, 1913. Both Philip Marion and
Eliza are buried in the Overstreet Cemetery, located on a farm about two
