Vance's Ferry is now the incorporated town of Vance in Orangeburg County,
just SW of the Santee River between Elloree on the north and Eutawville on
the south. The Gaillard, Sinkler, and Porcher families lived in Eutawville
rather than Vance; Eutawville is just down the river. This was the
northern extent of the Huguenot settlements on the Santee. One of the old
Gaillard houses is now underwater with Lake Marion, but The Rocks
survives. The old Sinkler house also survives, or at least did a while
back (hmm, come to think of it, it has been some time since I last saw
it).  

My maternal grandparents lived in Vance and my mother and her brothers
graduated from Eutawville High School. I have many fond memories --
however, I don't remember running into any Carliles. I'll ask my mother if
she knows anything of the family.
