Subject: Re: CARITHERS From: Jane McCombs Gillespie Date: May 23, 1998 Jan.. Edward Ball is white.. I thought you might have already heard about the book.. I checked the index and found no Cariethers or Mary Elizabeth Ball.. here is what is written on the sleeve of the book: Slaves in the Family is the story of one man's exploration of his families' slave-owning past and his search for the descendants of the people his ancestors kept as slaves.. In 1698 Elias Ball traveled from his home in Devon England to Charleston SC to take procession of his inheritance: part of a plantation and 20 slaves. Elias and his progeny built an American dynasty that lasted for 6 generations, acquiring more than 20 plantations along the Cooper River selling rice known as Carolina Gold and enslaving close to 4000 Africans & African Americans until 1865 when Union soldiers arrived on the lawns of the Ball estates to force emancipation.. This is the story of black & white families who lived side-by-side through 300 years etc... I recently went back through my McComb wills from Abbeville to get the names of the enslaved McComb.. this book sort of spurred me on.. I had promised Sonia Walker I would give her these names in the past to list on her Abbeville Enslavement Site.. finally did it..
