Subject: CAPERS & GUERRY of South Carolina

"Major LeGrand GUERRY, the great, great grandson of the Emigrant [1.], married Sarah CAPERS, the sister of Bishop William CAPERS, of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, whose son, Ellison, became the Seventh Bishop of South Carolina [2.], and my father's [3.] predecessor in office [4.]. Therefore, William Capers GUERRY, the son of Major LeGrand GUERRY and his wife Sarah CAPERS, and the Rt. Rev. Ellison CAPERS were first cousins. The father of Sarah CAPERS was Capt. William CAPERS, whose biography can be found in The S. C. Historical and Genealogical Magazine Vol. II, p. 273."

Source of quote: The Rev. Canon Edward B. Guerry, Editor. A 20th Century Prophet Being The Life And Thought Of William Alexander Guerry Eighth Bishop of South Carolina. Sewanee, TN: University Press, 1976. Chapter I: Family Background by The Reverend Canon Edward B. Guerry, 1. The Guerry Family, page 1.

Note: I capitalized the spelling of surnames within the above-quoted text. To help those unfamiliar with the GUERRY and CAPERS families, I (Mary Jacques) inserted footnote numbers within brackets [ ] in the above text. These footnote numbers refer to my comments in footnotes below.

MJs Footnotes:
1. Pierre GUERRI I - Huguenot ancestor came to South Carolina, naturalized in 1696 (page 1 in A 20th Century Prophet)
2. Episcopal Church
3. The Right Rev. William Alexander GUERRY, D.D.
4. Episcopal Bishop

Hope this helps,
