Cantey/Dennis Maraige - Dwight David Dennis
Subject: Cantey/Dennis Maraige
From: Dwight David Dennis
Date: April 19, 1998

I am currently researching this family in early SC, most evidence of
them is in the Sumter District,in the area that became Clarendon Co.,but
some connections to surrounding areas. Is anyone else researching DENNIS
in Sc. I would be grateful for any info on this family.

I show 150 acres of land granted to Henry Dennis on 12 NOV 1756,on the
Santee River above the mouth of Beaver Creek, between Saxegotha &
Amelia Townships
On Sept 9 & 10 ,1761 he sold it to Wolfgang Sheely Book D-4,pp. 158-162

Richard Gower Dennis was paid claims for provisions to the troops on 21
Jun 1786,6 May 1786 and had another edited for the a transaction dated
April 1781

On 1 March 1816 the following sold land originally granted to Henry
Dennis; Richard H.Dennis,Henry Dennis,Gower Dennis,James
R.Dennis,Francis Dennis,Josiah C. Dennis and William Dennis of the
District and State aforesaid and John Dennis of the Mississippi, this
was 116 acres, waters of Jacks Creek, Richard Gower Dennis was a
witness.

On 30 Oct 1815 the same persons sold land containing three hundred
seventy nine acres, situated and being in the District of Sumter waters
of Jacks creek. Richard Gower Dennis was a witness.

A dower release shows Richard Gower Dennis's wife to be a Susanna
I have the following from South Carolina Genealogies, Articles from
the South Carolina Historical
Magazine,Vol.
Josiah Cantey son of William Cantey of Craven had a dau. by his second
wife named Susanna who married a ___ Dennis
>From Camden District,SC Wills and Administrations
1781-1787(1770-1796),abstracted by Brent H. Holcomb,G.R.S. and Elmer O.
Parker
The estate package of William Cantey,Sr. shows Richd G. Dennis as one of
the buyers of property and
the numerous matches on names make me certain the Cantey families in the
2 books are the same.

I am currently looking for proof that Susanna Cantey is the wife of
Richard Gower Dennis.

On 14 Aug 1843 John Dennis of Holmes County, Ms gave power of attorney
to Gower Dennis of Autauga County, Al in the matter of the estate of
Richard H. Dennis of Sumter Co.,SC

All I am sure of about this family is that the Henry, James R. and Gower
Dennis mentioned in
the land sales are brothers and that they all settled in Autauga County,
Al.

Also to those following the DENNIS,GOWER,ROYAL connections in VA, I
found this family in the 1850 Horry District Census,SC, 17 July 1850,#53
family, both writing and film are of poor legibility
