The Butler Guards was a South Carolina Militia unit. Most of the members were
From Greenville County. In 1861 the Butler Guards became Company B of the 2nd
South Carolina Regiment in Kershaw's Brigade of the Confederate Army. Augustus
D. Hoke became Major of Company B. Joseph Brevard Kershaw formed many
companies from Greenville and nearby counties.
Abraham Isaacs, although born in New York, was a merchant in Greenville. He
was chosen as a Lieutenant in Butler Guards. During the war he was captured
five times but managed to escape each time.
Robert C. Pulliam was first commissioned Lieutenant then Captain. He was
killed at Gettysburg.
Alexander Sloan Duncan enlisted in Company B as a Private then transferred to
the Rutledge Mounted Rifles.
The McBee family was one of the earliest settlers in what became Greenville.
General Wade Hampton, of Revolutionary War fame, was quite popular in South
Carolina. Many young men were proud to have been named for him.
His grandson Colonel Wade Hampton was the commander of Hampton's Legion which
also was a Greenville County unit of the Confederate Army. He became General
and assumed command of the Confederate Cavalry when J. E. B. Stuart was
killed.
