Bryant, Conf. Vet obit (1940; Pacolet SC) - Gkinard
Subject: Bryant, Conf. Vet obit (1940; Pacolet SC)
From: Gkinard
Date: February 25, 1998

Thought this might help someone out there (I am researching the Bryants of
S'burg.) The B. D. in this obit stands for Benjamin Duren Bryant (the Benj.
is probably a variation of the name Berriman).

In addition to Bryant, the obit mentions three other Confederate veterans:
Gamewell, Martin and Westmoreland.

Obituary (Spartanburg Herald, Spartanburg, S. C. Monday, January 15, 1940)

B. D. Bryant, 92
Confederate Vet
Claimed by Death

Brief Illness is Fatal for
Pacolet Resident; Three
Veterans Survive

B. D. Bryant of Pacolet, one of Spartanburg County's four surviving veterans
of the great War Between the States, died at the General hospital here at 2
o'clock yesterday afternoon following a brief illness.

He was 92 years of age.

Although only a youth in his teens, Mr. Bryant enlisted in the Confederate
States Army and witnessed action in Virginia during the great conflict of
1861-65.

He was born and reared in the Pacolet section of Spartanburg county and was
known until his retirement several years ago as one of the piedmont section's
outstanding farmers. His farm is located between Pacolet Station and Pacolet
Mills.

Although his interests varied, he was particularly interested in affairs of
the United Confederate Veterans and had attended a majority of the reunions of
the organization.

Last summer, he attended the convention held by the veterans organization in
Trinidad, Colo. The preceding summer, he was one of the attendants at the
joint Confederate-Union Army Veterans' reunion at Gettysburg, Pa.; and in 1937
attended the Confederate veterans' convention at Jackson, Miss.

Mr. Bryant was a member of the Pacolet Station Methodist church, and also was
active for many years in the conventions of Christian Harmony singers held in
this and adjoining counties.

No members of his immediate family survive him. He is survived by seven
grandchildren, Mrs. A. G. Reynolds, Mrs. Robert Ingle, Fred Bryant, Wilkes
Bryant, Walter Bryant, L. D. Bryant and O. S. Bryant, all of Pacolet Mills;
and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conduced at 4 o'clock this afternoon at the Pacolet
Station Methodist Church by the Rev. R. A Hughes, the Rev. A. M. Doggett and
the Rev. W. T. Tate. Interment will be in the Methodist Cemetery in Pacolet.
Active pallbearers will be K. V. Coleman, Clifford McBride, Matt Smith, Harley
Kirby, B. S. Thomas and Rex Patterson.

Until the hour of services, the body will be at the home of his grandson, L.
D. Bryant.

Mr. Bryant's death leaves only three veterans of the Confederate Army
surviving in Spartanburg County. They are Prof. J. A. Gamewell of Spartanburg,
M. L. Martin of Chesnee and J. W. Westmoreland of Woodruff.
